JEWELL – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls’ basketball team kept up its hot play Friday with a 44-37 road win over South Hamilton at Jewell.

The Raiders (3-8, 1-6) used a big second quarter to gain control; then they held off the Hawks to score their third-straight victory, after starting off 0-8.

CMB led 24-21 at the half after scoring 16 points in the second quarter to overcome an early four-point deficit. The Raiders maintained a three-point lead after three quarters and then held South Hamilton to seven points over the final eight minutes to pull away.

Abbie Haupert and Lexi Breon carried most of the load on offense for the Raiders.

Haupert posted another double-double with 24 points and 17 rebounds. She hit 10 of 15 field goals and also came away with five steals, two assists and one block.

Breon canned 6 of 11 field goals, including two 3-pointers, and she was 1 of 2 from the line, finishing with 15 points. Breon also did a great job running the offense, tallying nine assists.

Mikayla Eslinger chipped in three points and nine rebounds and Mackenzie Schmitz delivered two points and steals apiece for CMB.

Savana Stangeland put up 12 points and five rebounds for South Hamilton in a losing effort. Carly Swenson added eight points and four boards for the Hawks.

BAXTER – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter came back from break and turned in an impressive performance Jan. 2 at Baxter as the Raiders handed Ankeny Christian Academy its first loss, 60-50.

CMB rallied from a slim deficit with a tremendous fourth quarter to hand ACA its first loss of the season.

The Raiders led 28-25 at the half, but ACA held them to eight points in the third quarter to build a two-point cushion. In the fourth quarter CMB caught fire at just the right time, netting 24 points over the final eight minutes to surge past the Eagles to victory.

CMB shot at a strong 54-percent clip from the field and made 16 of 26 free throws, compared to ACA’s 7 of 10 showing from the line. The Raiders also posted a 38-28 rebounding advantage and held the Eagles to just 3 of 21 shooting from 3-point range.

Abbie Haupert had a monster game inside as the key driving force to victory for CMB. Haupert made 9 of 14 field goals and 9 of 10 free throws, finishing with a game-high 27 points; she also ripped down a whopping 17 rebounds and tallied four steals, one assist and one block.

Lexi Breon was the perfect perimeter complement to Haupert. The Raider point guard scored 17 points and she also dished out an impressive 11 assists.

Freshman Sydney Ziesman tacked on six points and two steals; Mackenzie Schmitz had four points, five assists and three steals; Mikayla Eslinger delivered four points and three rebounds and Megan Ritter chipped in two points and three boards for CMB.

Madison Laib led ACA with 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals. Lizzie Deo added 11 points and three steals and Alli Howard had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.

MAXWELL – A big second half propelled Collins-Maxwell-Baxter past Grandview Park Baptist for its first victory of the season Dec. 21 in Maxwell as the Raiders rallied from nine points down to hand the Defenders their first loss, 54-49.

CMB trailed 26-17 at the half, and by the end of the third quarter, the Raiders were still behind by seven. But a 22-point fourth quarter, combined with good defense down the stretch, enabled CMB to pull off the upset and get its first victory.

The Raiders used good balance on offense, great perimeter defense and dominance on the glass to get the job done against the Defenders.

CMB had four players score at least eight points.

Center Abbie Haupert led the way for CMB with 19 points. Haupert hit 8 of 16 field and 3 of 4 free throws and she also finished with 12 rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

Guard Lexi Breon tacked on 14 points after making 5 of 9 field goals and all four of her free-throw attempts. Breon also did well running the offense, handing out nine assists.

Forwards Bridget Hurley and Mikayla Eslinger combined for 17 points for CMB. Hurley had nine points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals and Eslinger finished with eight points, five rebounds and one block.

Mackenzie Schmitz chipped in four points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal for CMB.

On defense CMB held Grandview Park Baptist to 1 of 10 shooting from 3-point range. The Raiders also pulled down 39 rebounds to the Defenders’ 24.

Katie Hall, Kayle Whittington and Shayla McCool accounted for all of Grandview Park Baptist’s scoring. Hall had 24 points, five rebounds and three assists, Whittington recorded 16 points and seven rebounds and McCool added nine points and three assists.
