Raiders edge SH on senior night

ROLAND – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter softball team ended the regular season with a 9-2 loss to Roland-Story Friday in Roland.

CMB gave up five runs in the second inning and one in the fifth, falling behind 6-0. The Raiders plated two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Norse answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to slam the door on CMB.

Becky Williams doubled in both CMB runs and Cortney Ubben was 2-for-3 with a run. Payge Jurgens also singled and scored, Taylor Ross finished 2-for-3, Mackenzie Schmitz walked and singled and Brittany Peterson added one hit for CMB.

Cheyanne Warne took the loss on the mound after giving up four earned runs on 11 hits with seven walks and three strikeouts in six innings. Erin Nuetzman picked up the win for Roland-Story after giving up two earned runs with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings and Alexa Whipple paced the Norse offensively by going 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

CMB finished 7-11 in the Heart of Iowa Conference and the Raiders’ overall record moved to 11-20.

COLLINS – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter celebrated senior night with a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Hamilton July 3 in Collins.

The Raiders plated the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth inning and then they held off South Hamilton in the seventh to complete a season sweep of the Hawks.

Cortney Ubben doubled in the sixth and she scored the only run of the night. Taylor Ross drove Ubben home and she ended up 1-for-3.

Cheyanne Warne finished 2-for-3 with a double; Mackenzie Schmitz, Megan Ritter, Abby Applegate and Payge Jurgens each singled for CMB. Ubben also drew two walks on the night.

Warne earned the victory in her final home game. She struck out eight and allowed six hits and one walk to earn the shutout.

Ady Wintermote was the losing pitcher for South Hamilton as she finished with four strikeouts and two walks in six innings. She also went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate.

GILBERT – A late explosion at the plate helped Collins-Maxwell-Baxter roll to a 12-4 Heart of Iowa Conference road victory over Gilbert July 2.

The Raiders trailed 2-1 after four innings. But in the top of the fifth they plated three runs to go ahead, and then added a six-run outburst in the sixth to take charge.

CMB tacked on two more runs in the seventh and then coasted home to its sixth conference victory.

Mackenzie Schmitz, Megan Ritter, Abby Applegate, Becky Williams, Payge Jurgens and Taylor Ross each had two hits as part of CMB’s 15-hit attack. Schmitz added a steal and a run; Ritter scored twice and stole a base; Applegate drove in two runs and walked twice; Jurgens doubled, scored and knocked in three runs; Williams scored, stole a base and recorded four RBI and Ross scored once.

Cheyanne Warne doubled and walked, Cortney Ubben was 1-for-3 with two runs and Mikayla Eslinger singled, walked and delivered two steals and RBI apiece. Elizabeth Jones scored twice and Emily Coughenour and Heather Jessen each crossed the plate once for the Raiders.

Warne picked up the win as she struck out one batter and allowed two earned runs on seven hits with one walk in seven innings.

Clare Isenhart was the losing pitcher for Gilbert after giving up three earned runs with four strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Cali Koeneke drove in two runs and Johanna Holck was 3-for-4 with a double and a run for the Tigers.

COLLINS – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter couldn’t shake a bad stretch over the third and fourth innings in a 9-3 setback against Colfax-Mingo July 1 in Collins.

The Raiders gave up four runs in the third and three in the fourth, falling behind 8-1. Colfax-Mingo upped its lead to eight runs in the sixth inning and CMB was only able to shave two runs off that deficit in the seventh to end up on the losing end of the stick.

Cortney Ubben went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Taylor Ross was 2-for-2 and Mackenzie Schmitz and Brittany Peterson each had one hit for CMB. Payge Jurgens walked and scored twice, Abby Applegate walked three times and Megan Ritter drew a free pass and scored once for the Raiders.

Jade Lewis was 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI to lead Colfax-Mingo at the plate. Alivia Haley went 3-for-5 with a walk, three runs and a steal and Amy Russell finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI for the Tigerhawks.

Heather Jessen took the loss for CMB as she gave up eight runs – six earned – on six hits with two walks and no strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Cheyanne Warne threw the other 3 2/3 frames and she gave up one earned run on four hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

Russell earned the victory for Colfax-Mingo as she picked up five strikeouts and walks apiece in seven innings.

COLLINS – Not much went right for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in an 11-0 loss to Prairie City-Monroe June 28 in five innings at Collins.

CMB gave up two runs in the first inning and three in each of the next three frames. The Raider offense never got on track as the game ended early due to the 10-run rule.

Cheyanne Warne took the loss after giving up 10 earned runs on 12 hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Heather Jessen threw the other 1 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Warne, Megan Ritter, Payge Jurgens, Cortney Ubben, Becky Williams and Taylor Ross each singled once for CMB in the loss.

Kelsey Townsend hit two doubles and drove in three runs, Abigail Gilson homered and drove in two runs and Molly Vignovich was 3-for-4 with a double and a run to pace PCM on offense. Payge Edwards was the winning pitcher after striking out seven with no walks in five innings.
