Raiders stop Grundy Center

COLLINS – Things quickly spiraled out of control for the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team against Saydel Monday in Collins.

The Raiders gave up six runs in the first inning, three in the second and four in the third, falling behind 14-0 and they never regrouped, suffering a 15-1 setback in five innings.

CMB scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth. The game ended an inning later due to the 10-run put in place after five innings as the Raiders fell to 1-11 overall and 0-10 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Levi Anderson gave up six runs – four earned – on five hits with one strikeout and no walks in 2/3 of an inning to take the loss. Seth Balke allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 2 1/3 of an inning and Zach Samson gave up seven runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts in two innings for CMB.

Brady Stover walked, stole a base and scored the only CMB run. Samson singled for the lone Raider hit and he also stole one base.

STATE CENTER – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter picked up its first victory of the season after splitting games with Grundy Center and West Marshall at the Rose Festival Tournament Saturday in State Center.

The Raiders defeated Grundy Center by a score of 6-2. CMB jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings and took a 6-0 lead into the seventh inning.

Nate Bishop was the winning pitcher as he threw all seven innings and allowed one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. CMB provided him with plenty of offensive support, despite picking up just four hits during the game.

Seth Balke smacked a pair of doubles and had one run and RBI apiece and Aaron Haupert doubled and finished with one run and one RBI for the Raiders. Zach Samson was 1-for-3 with a walk, steal and run, Brady Stover walked and drove in a run, Levi Anderson walked and scored, Logan Cory finished with one run and RBI apiece and Nick Carroll also scored once.

Elliott Eggleston gave up two earned runs and had five strikeouts and three walks in six innings to take the loss for Grundy Center.

CMB suffered a 5-2 loss to West Marshall in its other game on the day. The Raiders hung tough early, but couldn’t overcome a three-run Trojan inning in the fifth.

Zach Hartgers took the loss as he threw all six innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks. The Raiders only had three hits and they also picked up just one walk on offense.

Bryce Kemp hit a solo home run and Balke also scored once to account for the two Raider runs. Stover walked and singled and Anderson also had a single for CMB in the loss.

Garrett Nichols earned the win for West Marshall as he allowed one earned run with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings. Nolan Sinning was 1-for-3 with run, steal and two RBI; Justin Weitzell and Jared Riemenschneider each scored twice and Cody Berns delivered a pinch-hit double to lead the Trojans on offense.

GILBERT – One terrible inning wiped out six quality innings of play by Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in a 13-9 road loss to Gilbert June 13.

CMB played outstanding baseball over the first 5 ½ innings and it appeared the Raiders were going to shock the Tigers after building a 9-1 lead. But Gilbert caught lightning in a bottle in the bottom of the sixth, plating a stunning 12 runs in the inning to steal a win away from CMB as the Raiders were unable to answer in the top of the seventh inning against Tiger relief pitcher Evan Johnson.

Brady Stover threw five great innings for CMB as he surrendered three runs – just one earned – on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks before being taken out with no outs in the sixth. Seth Balke and Zach Samson combined to allow 10 runs – nine earned – on nine hits in the sixth, with Samson taking the loss.

Samson had a big game offensively for CMB as he went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two runs and RBI apiece. Bryce Kemp was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI; Aaron Haupert finished 2-for-4 with a double, walk and three runs and Stover finished 2-for-5 with a double, steal and run.

Nick Carroll and Levi Anderson each added one single as part of CMB’s 10-hit attack. Balke walked two times and also scored twice.

Wesley Greder gave up six runs – three earned – on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks as the starting pitcher for Gilbert. Jake Rhoads earned the win after allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece in two innings and Johnson closed things out with a hitless seventh.

Jordan Knock, Jared Gescheidler and Zach Paul each delivered two hits for Gilbert. Knock and Gescheidler both scored twice and drove in a run, Paul doubled and drove in two runs and Jacob Adams also had a double and two RBI for the Tigers.

COLFAX – It was a rough night for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter against Colfax-Mingo June 12 in Colfax as the Raiders gave up eight extra-base hits in a 14-3 loss in six innings.

CMB fell behind 7-0 after three innings and the Raiders also allowed two runs in the fourth and five in the sixth. Colfax-Mingo finished with 15 hits – including seven doubles and one home run – and CMB only mustered four hits on the night.

Seth Balke took the loss after allowing five runs – three earned – on seven hits with one strikeout and no walks in 2 1/3 innings. Levi Anderson also threw 2 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on three hits with one strikeout and Bryce Kemp threw the other 2/3 of an inning.

Nick Carroll doubled in a run; Zach Hartgers singled, walked, stole a base and tallied one run and RBI apiece; Zach Samson singled in a run and Kemp and Aaron Haupert both walked and scored for CMB. Brady Stover added one single for the Raiders.

Jake Alexander finished 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs and four RBI and Chad McLain ended up 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles and three runs and RBI apiece for Colfax-Mingo. Austin Yoakum threw all six innings to get the victory for the Tigerhawks as he totaled eight strikeouts and three walks.

STORY CITY – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter couldn’t keep pace with a Roland-Story team ranked fourth in Class 2A June 11 in Story City as the Raiders gave up one big inning and struggled offensively in a 10-0 loss in six innings.

Roland-Story gradually chipped away at CMB over the first four innings. The Norsemen scored twice in the second inning and one run apiece in the first, third and fourth frames to build a 5-0 lead.

CMB kept Roland-Story off the board in the fifth, but the Norse came back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game an inning early due to the 10-run rule.

Levi Anderson allowed nine runs – four earned – on 10 hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings to take the loss for CMB. Zach Hartgers gave up one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout in 2/3 of an inning for the Raiders.

Brady Stover was 2-for-3 and Darrien Sadler singled once to account for the lone CMB hits. Sadler also walked once and Zach Samson picked up one free pass.

Colton Finley was 2-for-3 with a double, walk, two runs and two RBI; Zach Hovick finished 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI and Riley Ellis went 2-for-4 with a double and a run to pace Roland-Story on offense. Freshman Tyler Hovick was the winning Norse pitcher as he struck out four and gave up just one hit and walk apiece in three innings.
