Raiders struggle offensively in 6-0 loss
MADRID – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter softball team couldn’t get the timely hits it needed against Madrid in Class 3A regional quarterfinal play July 9 as the Raiders suffered a 6-0 loss at the hands of the Tigers.
CMB finished with five hits, just one less than Madrid’s total for the night. But the Raiders never strung anything together and the Tigers took advantage to pull away.
The third inning was the big turning point in the game. Madrid broke a scoreless tie with a four-run surge in the inning.
CMB kept within striking distance going into the sixth. But Madrid scored once in each of the final two innings and the Raiders continued their offensive drought, ending up on the losing end of the stick.
Cheyanne Warne was the losing pitcher in her final game for the Raiders. Warne allowed three earned runs on six hits with six walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.
Payge Jurgens doubled; Warne, Mackenzie Schmitz, Abby Applegate and Cortney Ubben each had a single on the night and Schmitz also walked once. The Raiders ended the season at 11-21.
Sarah Kleinwort finished with one strikeout and walk apiece to earn the win for Madrid. Chelsea Hinkel went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI to pace the Tigers at the plate.
