Two Raider girls place in top 20

PELLA – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys’ cross country team opened the season with a strong third-place effort and the Raider girls placed two runners in the top 20 at the Pella Invitational Saturday at Central College.

The CMB boys had two runners place in the top 10, finishing with 110 points. Gilbert won the boys’ team title with 28 points, Nevada took second with a score of 56, BGM was fourth with 139 points, PCM placed fifth with 150 and Lynnville-Sully came in last with a point total of 170.

"Our boys did a fine job today," CMB head coach Jerry Meinerts said. "It’s been a few years since our boys have finished that high, so I am looking forward to see what this group of guys can do this season."

Mark Deutsch – the top returning Raider runner from last year – led the CMB boys with a sixth-place individual five-kilometer time of 18 minutes, 40 seconds. Colin Thomson stepped up big in his first race, taking 10th in 19:36.

Calvin Jones ran a 21:05 to place 27th, Drake Caple was 33rd in 22:05 and Eric Hall-Flooden clocked in at 22:24 to place 34th as the final scored Raider runner.

Gilbert’s Thomas Pollard won the Class B individual title as he ran the fastest time among all boys’ runners in both classes – clocking in at 16:13.

In the girls’ competition CMB had 111 points. Gilbert again won with a score of 37, Lynnville-Sully was second with 65 points and Nevada took third with a score of 76.

"Our girls competed well today," Meinerts said. "We are not where we need to be right now, but I guarantee that we are only going to get better from here."

Freshmen Heather Jessen and Winter Brown both placed in the top 20 to lead the CMB girls. Jessen ran a four-kilometer time of 19:28 to come in 16th and Brown finished 20th with a time of 19:50.

Mackenzie Klemme and Stephanie Twohey both finished in the top 25 for CMB. Klemme was 22nd in 20:15 and Twohey took 25th in 20:29.

Chantel Maxwell was the final scored runner for the Raider girls as she crossed the finish line in 20:51 to place 28th.

Gilbert’s Grace Gibbons was the Class B individual champion. Like Pollard, she beat all runners from both classes, clocking in at 15:28.
