EAGLE GROVE – The Ballard wrestling team did just enough to bring home the team championship from the Eagle Grove Invitational Saturday.

Depth was the key for the Bombers as they placed in all 14 weight classes and claimed three top-10 finishes, including two individual championships. The end results saw Ballard score 202 points to edge Fort Dodge by a single point for the team championship among eight competing teams.

Returning state qualifiers Mitchell Broer and Nathan Macki were the two individual gold medal winners for Ballard.

Broer – ranked fourth at 132 pounds in Class 2A by The Predicament – took first at 138 pounds by going 2-0 on the day.

After receiving a first round bye, Broer pinned Ankeny’s Sam Escherich in three minutes, 50 seconds to reach the finals. In the title match Broer won a hard-fought 7-4 decision over Clarion-Goldfield’s Taylor Lehman, who begins the season ranked fourth at 138 in 1A.

Macki made short work of his opposition at Eagle Grove. Competing at 132, he went 3-0, with each victory coming by fall.

In the championship round Macki took care of Clarion-Goldfield’s Joel Haberman in 4:46.

Easton Estabrooks provided Ballard with one silver medalist at Eagle Grove.

Competing at 120, Estabrooks went 1-1 after receiving an opening-round bye. Estabrooks pinned Eagle Grove’s Parker Slagle in 1:36 during the semifinals, and then he fell by a 9-4 decision to Fort Dodge’s Cole Detmering in the title match.

Ballard had a plethora of wrestlers earn a bronze medal at Eagle Grove.

Bailey Heinen (106 pounds), Louie Howlett (126), Kenton Brekke (145), Will May (170), Tyler Kyhl (182), Easton Moody (220) and Alex Silberstein (285) each took third at the tournament. Heinen, Howlett, Brekke and May all were 3-1, Kyhl and Silberstein were both 2-1 and Moody ended up 1-1.

Ben Claussen added a fourth-place finish at 182 as he split four matches. Andrew Rasmussen also went 2-2 at 160, placing fifth, Mark Goldberg took fifth at 152 with a 1-2 record and John Fleenor ended up sixth at 113.

ADEL – The Ballard wrestling team opened the season with a Raccoon River Conference dual victory over Adel-Desoto-Minburn Dec. 5 at Adel.

The Bombers rolled to a 45-24 victory behind the strength of four pins and a victory by technical fall.

Ethan Estabrooks, Nathan Macki, Easton Moody and Jed Miller were the four Bombers to score a fall during the match.

Estabrooks stuck ADM’s Nate Fountas in one minute flat at 120 pounds. Macki – the fifth-ranked wrestler at 126 in Class 2A by The Predicament – wrestled at 132 against ADM and he took care of the Tigers’ Luke Huen in 2:17.

Moody pinned ADM’s Zach Ostendorf in 2:52 at 220 and Miller took care of the Tigers’ John Throne in 3:06 at 106.

Kenton Brekke was the Bomber to earn a win by technical fall. He defeated ADM’s Caleb Weddle by a 17-2 margin at 145.

Bailey Heinen added a major decision victory at 113 for Ballard, taking care of the Tigers’ Kyle Wilkerson by a 14-5 score.

Mitchell Broer – the No. 4 wrestlers at 132 – went up to 138 and downed ADM’s Trevor Harsh by a 5-2 decision. Alex Silberstein also won by decision for Ballard at 285 as he took out Nathan Heath by a 6-1 margin.

Louie Howlett picked up a forfeit at 126 to account for Ballard’s other points.
