Kohut-Jackson claims gold for girls, boys win medley relay

CARLISLE – The Ballard girls’ and boys’ track teams both won a conference championship in one event at the Raccoon River Conference meet Monday.

The Bomber girls picked up a gold medal in the 1,500-meter run and they also took the silver in the 4 X 200 and bronze in the distance medley. As a team, the Bombers placed sixth out of nine schools with 38 points.

Freshman Abby-Kohut Jackson had a great first RRC meet as she won the 1,500 and anchored the Bombers to their success in the distance medley.

In the 1,500 Kohut-Jackson clocked in at five minutes, 6.11 seconds. Ellie Godwin, Sydney Fisher and Val Charter ran the first three legs of the distance medley for the Bombers as they completed the race in 4:29.34.

Kohut-Jackson also placed fourth individually in the 800 with a time of 2:27.81.

The Bomber 4 X 200 team of Sydney Smith, Madison McInroy, Godwin and Fisher picked up the silver medal with a time of 1:54.34. Charter, Godwin and Kohut-Jackson joined up with Kennedy Newell to take fourth in the 4 X 400 with a time of 4:29.77.

Smith, Newell, Godwin and Gabie Doud gave Ballard a fifth-place time of 2:00.64 in the sprint medley. Smith and Doud teamed up with Alexis Scharfenkamp and Ashley Meldrum to run a fifth-place time of 11:34.04 in the 4 X 800 and the Bomber shuttle hurdle team of Hannah Jensen, Rachel Watters, Anna Gifford-Holly and Rachel Bruns took fifth in 1:15.75.

Watters tacked on a sixth-place time individually in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:13.11.

Adel-Desoto-Minburn won the girls’ team title with 138 points and Dallas Center-Grimes came in second with a score of 124.

The Bomber boys won the distance medley relay and earned a silver in the shuttle hurdle. As a team, the Ballard boys placed seventh out of nine teams with 33 points.

Zach Thompson, Isaiah Johnson, Michael Wulfekuhle and Michael Wuestenberg teamed up to win the medley in 3:45.41. Perry was a distant second with a 3:50.79 showing.

In the shuttle hurdle Wulfekuhle, Mason Edwards, Jacob Bernholtz and Caleb Schafbuch ran a time of 1:01.88 to place just behind Carroll’s winning time of 1:01.28.

Ballard also took fifth in the 4 X 200, and sixth in the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relays with respective times of 1:36.24, :47.09 and 3:43.86.

Individually, Noah Wheeler picked up a bronze medal for Ballard in the 3,200. Wheeler completed the race in 10:36.41. Boone’s Albert Meier and Chandler Austin were first and second with respective times of 10:20.04 and 10:20.58.

Schafbuch came in fifth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of :16.47 and Luke Kohut-Jackson ran a fifth-place time of 4:51.53 in the 1,600.

Boone edged Perry for the boys’ team championship as the Toreadors had 96 points and the Bluejays finished with 94.

Both Ballard teams will compete in the Class 3A state qualifying meet in Nevada this afternoon, beginning at 4 p.m. at Cub Stadium.
