Ballard heads to district meet Friday

BOONE – The goal of returning to state is still alive and well for the Ballard boys’ golf team after the Bombers won the Class 3A sectional meet Friday at the Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone.

All six Ballard golfers shot under 90 over 18 holes, and the team’s four scored golfers carded an 84 or better. That resulted in a team score of 324, which edged out Webster City’s 325 for the sectional title.

"I’m glad we won and have another chance to make it to state," Ballard’s Nick Hartman said. "We were close last year (at sectionals), but just came up short."

Hartman turned in the second-best Bomber score with an 80 after shooting a 37 on the front nine and 43 on the back. He said the team carried over the momentum it gained from winning the Raccoon River Conference meet last week into sectionals, and hopes the things keep going the Bombers’ way next week at the challenging Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella.

"We’ve got to keep playing like we have been," Hartman said. "We played really well at conference and could’ve played better today, but we still played well. As long as we come in somewhere around 320 next week, I think we’ll be sitting pretty well."

Ty Mason led Ballard at sectionals with a 78. Mason was consistent throughout the day, shooting a 39 on both the front and back nine to finish fourth overall, which was good enough to qualify him individually for state."

"The course played well today," Mason said. "It was a little wet out there and the greens were pretty sandy, but it was nice. I like it out here."

Mason said his performance made up for a rough showing at last year’s sectional meet at the Coldwater Golf Course in Ames.

"It feels pretty awesome to qualify individually, especially after last year’s run," Mason said. "I’m happy with a 78 and I’m pumped to have my team coming with me. I didn’t want to go alone."

Nash Bucher and Mason Jensen were the other scored Bomber golfers. Bucher struggled early, but had an excellent 36 on the back nine to finish with an 82, and Jensen benefited from a strong 39 on the front nine to shoot an 84.

Michael McVicker and Brandon Thompson also competed for Ballard. McVicker carded an 86 and Thompson finished with an 88.

Nevada’s Colynn Black was the meet’s medalist as he finished with a 74 after shooting a 38 on the front and 36 on the back. His team just missed moving on to districts as only the top two teams qualify and the Cubs ended up third with a score of 328.

Webster City’s Alec Fuse was medalist runner-up with 75 and Iowa Falls-Alden’s Tim Taylor took third with a 77.

The 3A district meet will tee off at 9 a.m. this Friday.
