Ballard blanks Perry, 6-0
ADEL – Great pitching and defense wasn’t enough for the Ballard baseball team against Adel-Desoto-Minburn Monday as the Bombers suffered a 2-1 loss in eight innings at Adel.
Ballard pitcher Coy Baker was outstanding as he went the distance and gave up just five hits and one walk in 7 2/3 innings. Baker also struck out eight batters and only one of ADM’s runs was earned.
But Ballard never got anything going at the plate. The Bombers only mustered two hits and they also only picked up one walk on the night.
ADM jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning, but Baker shut the Tigers down over the next six innings to allow Ballard to tie the game and force extra innings. Taylor Bridgewater drove in Matthew Poots for Ballard’s only run in the top of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the eighth Baker picked up two outs, but he couldn’t get the third before the Tigers scored the winning run to drop Ballard to 6-4 on the season and 1-4 in the Raccoon River Conference.
Kordell Lettow collected both Ballard hits as he finished 2-for-4. Jacob Nethers also drew a walk for Ballard.
Grant Goeden went 3-for-4 with a triple, run and RBI to lead ADM. Dylan Nelson threw two scoreless, hitless innings of relief with five strikeouts to earn the win and Sam Kornstad gave up one earned run with one walk and seven strikeouts in six innings for the Tigers.

SLATER – Ballard used a big second inning and great pitching to cruise to a 6-0 victory over Perry June 6 at Nite Hawk Field.
The Bombers scored four times in the second inning and added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. That was more than enough support for ace hurler Coy Baker as he tossed a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Collin Fopma went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Jacob Bernholtz was 2-for-3 with a steal and two RBI to pace Ballard’s nine-hit attack on offense. Matthew Poots went 1-for-2 with a steal, run and RBI, Jacob Nethers delivered a pinch-hit double and a run and Baker, Taylor Bridgewater and Kordell Lettow each added one single.

WINTERSET – The inability to string together hits hurt Ballard in a 6-4 Raccoon River Conference loss to Winterset June 5 at Winterset.
The Bombers took advantage of seven walks to score twice in the third inning and two more times in the sixth. But they only had two hits all night and that wasn’t enough to get past the Huskies’ eight-hit attack.
Winterset plated one run in both the second and third frames and two in the fourth and sixth innings. Alex Forgy went 1-for-2 with two walks, three steals, a run and two RBI; Allen Shahan was 2-for-4 with a double, run, steal and two RBI and Brandon Herr finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run to pace Winterset on offense.
Tanner Porter was the winning pitcher after giving up four runs – none earned – on two hits with seven walks and five strikeouts in six innings.
