Bomber doubles team top team from Knoxville

The Ballard doubles team of Alana Bendler and Jenna Leland went 1-2 at the Class 1A singles/doubles meet May 30 at both the Ankeny Tennis Complex and Drake University.

Bendler and Leland suffered a hard-fought three-set loss to Charles City’s Morgan Holzer and Kirby Meyer in the first round, but they came back to defeat Knoxville’s Kassie Griggs and Taylor Carter in the consolation first round. Bendler and Leland then had their day end with a loss to Pella Christian’s Veronica Francis and Paige Engbers in the consolation quarterfinals.

"Jenna and Alana had a good day Thursday," Ballard head coach Mike Carr said. "The girls played some very good tennis. They hit a lot of good ground strokes and had some great net shots. Both girls are seniors and they will be missed, not only for the 154 career wins they had combined, but also for their leadership."

In the loss to Holzer and Meyer the Bomber tandem opened up with a 7-5 victory in the first set. The second set saw rain force the match to move from the Ankeny Tennis Complex to the indoor courts at Drake and Bendler and Leland ended up on the short end of a 7-5 decision.

The third set resulted in Bendler and Leland suffering a 6-1 setback to drop the match.

In the first-round consolation match, Bendler and Leland won the first set over Griggs and Carter by a 6-3 score and took a 5-4 lead in the second set. But Griggs and Carter came back to tie the second set at 6-6 and then take the tiebreaker by a 7-3 score to force a third set.

In the third set the Ballard team won the super tiebreaker in a competitive 10-8 battle. That put Bendler and Leland in the consolation quarterfinals, where they were swept by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 by Francis and Engbers.

Waterloo Columbus’ Lindsay McManus and Lindsay McGonegle won the 1A doubles state championship.
