Bombers win one set versus Gilbert

HUXLEY – The Ballard volleyball team couldn’t finish off a strong opening set against Pella Aug. 29 in Huxley and the Bombers went flat after that in a three-set loss to the Little Dutch.

Ballard controlled the opening set for a long stretch before ending up on the short end of a 25-23 decision. The close loss took a little wind out of the Bombers’ sails in the second set as they went flat in a 25-15 loss;d in the third set Pella prevailed by a 25-19 margin as Ballard fell to 0-2 on the season.

The Bombers had a kill-efficiency rate of .080 against Pella. They totaled 11 kills and seven errors in 50 attacks.

Ballard’s biggest strong point in the match was blocking. The Bombers totaled 24 blocks, including four solo blocks.

The Bomber serving game yielded a 55 of 60 showing with four aces. Ballard also picked up 24 digs and 11 assists as a team.

Alanna Dubberke led Ballard in kills with five and she also had five blocks. Meredith Ossian finished with seven blocks and she tacked on two kills. Brooke Mallon slammed home three kills and tacked on five blocks and two digs.

Alex Petersen led Ballard in digs with six and Charcey Petersen and Abby Carlin totaled five apiece. Charcey also dished out six assists and Carlin handed out five.

HUXLEY – Ballard opened the season with a four-set loss to non-conference foe Gilbert Aug. 27 in Huxley.

The Bombers started sluggish, but came on strong later to give the Tigers a scare.

Ballard lost the first two sets by respective scores of 25-18 and 25-16. The Bombers came back with a dominant 25-13 victory in the third set and they pushed Gilbert again in set No. 4 before losing by a 25-20 margin to drop the match.

For the match Ballard struggled with its attack, recording just 18 kills and 58 errors for a minus-.435 kill-efficiency rate. The Bombers also had a little accuracy problem serving with a success rate of .862, but they did total 23 aces.

Ballard did a good job at the net defensively, finishing with eight solo blocks.

Alanna Dubberke led Ballard in solo blocks with five and she also topped the team in kills with six. Hannah Larsen, Brooke Mallon and Meredith Ossian chipped in three kills apiece and Abby Carlin finished with two.

Carlin also handed out eight assists and went 25 of 27 serving with six aces. Mallon picked up four digs and she was an impressive 29 of 32 with 12 aces serving, Ossian delivered three solo blocks and two aces and Larsen was 12 of 14 serving.

Charcey Petersen led Ballard in assists with nine and she was also 16 of 19 serving with three aces. Alex Petersen led the way in digs with five.
