MONTEZUMA - The Collins-Maxwell girls’ cross country team claimed the team championship at the Montezuma Invitational Oct. 4 at the Montezuma Country Club.
The Spartan girls scored 51 points to beat South Tama by 13 points for first out of five scored teams. Collins-Maxwell had two runners place in the top 10, and all seven of its varsity runners finished in the top 20.
“We hadn’t raced since Sept. 20th, so it was really nice to get a chance to run again,” Collins-Maxwell head cross country coach Jerry Meinerts said. “I’m proud of the way our girls competed tonight on one of the toughest courses around. Our times are nothing to brag about, but this was a great hill workout to get in.”
Avery Fricke led Collins-Maxwell with a 5-kilometer time of 23 minutes, 56 seconds as she came in fourth overall. Morgan Day took eighth with a time of 24:22.
Alexis Houge placed 12th in 25:35, Hannah Sievert 13th in 25:41 and Mikayla Houge 14th in 25:47 to complete the Spartan scoring. Olivia Pasquariello clocked in at 25:54 to place 17th and Shasta Moody 20th in 26:20.
Janee Jones also ran for the Spartan girls. She turned in a 48th-place time of 32:16.
North Mahaska’s Cheyenne Shaw, ranked 14th individually in Class 1A, won the girls’ race at Montezuma with a time of 21:31. South Tama’s Callie Frakes was second in 22:19 and Montezuma’s Elise Boulton, the No. 22 runner in 1A, placed third in 23:30.
In the boys’ race, Collins-Maxwell came in fourth out of five teams with 88 points. The Spartans were just five points behind Colfax-Mingo’s runner-up score of 83.
“I thought they did a really good job racing hard tonight,” Meinerts said of his boys’ team. “Our top three guys were within about 50 seconds of each other.”
Jacob Pierick delivered a fifth-place 5-kilometer time of 20:05 as the fastest runner for the Collins-Maxwell boys. Daniel Klein came in 11th in 20:31 and Josh Sievert 14th in 20:57 as the other top runners for the Spartans.
Addison Swaab and Carter Davis also scored for Collins-Maxwell with respective times of 23:58 and 24:14. Swaab placed 33rd and Davis 38th.
Victor Genovese fell just shy of scoring for the Spartans with a 39th-place time of 24:25. Carter Merryman placed 40th in 24:34.
Belle Plaine’s Kobe Grieder won the boys’ race in 18:50 and South Tama’s Garrett Arp took second in 19:05.
