CARROLL - The North Polk girls’ cross country team earned a third-place finish behind two ranked teams at the Kuemper Catholic Invitational Saturday at Swan Lake Park in Carroll.


The Comet girls, ranked No. 13 in Class 3A, scored 72 points to come in just two points behind No. 11 Atlantic for second place out of 11 scored teams. Harlan, the No. 4 team in 3A, won the team championship with 41 points.


Lucy Schaffer kept up the outstanding start to her freshman season by placing sixth with a 5-kilometer time of 21 minutes, 24 seconds to lead the Comet girls. North Polk had four other runners place in the top 20.


Addie Cooper, Aleah McBee, Sophie Schaffer and Kennedy Wendel ran in a tight pack — placing within 12 seconds of each other. Cooper finished 15th in 22:48, McBee 16th in 22:54, Schaffer 17th in 22:57 and Wendel 18th in 23 minutes flat.


Abi Zimmer was just outside the final group of scored runners for North Polk with a 26th-place time of 23:24. Izzie Bergstrom came in 33rd at 23:45.


Atlantic’s Taylor McCreedy easily won the girls’ race in 20:39 and Spencer’s Brenna Fisher and Elisa Fisher took second and third with respective times of 21:02 and 21:05. McCreedy is rated ninth, Brenna 23rd and Elisa 26th in 3A.


The North Polk boys finished 11th out of 12 teams with 263 points. Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson won the boys’ team title with 45 points, Lewis Central was second with 89 points and Bondurant-Farrar placed third with a score of 105.


Gabe Drake was the first runner for the Comet boys to finish as he turned in a 5-kilometer time of 19:47 to place 28th. Seth Subra took 49th in 20:35, Noah Church 60th in 20:54, Nathan Crabb 72nd in 21:22, Bryce Houser 80th in 21:57 and Will Lesher 106th in 23:24.


Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson’s Aidan Booton won the boys’ race individually in 17:48 and Atlantic’s Jalen Petersen and Harlan’s Trey Gross were close behind with 17:57 and 17:58 efforts. Booton is ranked 29th in 4A and Petersen 12th in 3A.

PELLA - The North Polk girls finished second to Pella in a close race between ranked Class 3A teams and the Comet boys turned in a fourth-place performance at the Pella Invitational Tuesday on the Central College course.


The North Polk girls, ranked No. 13, scored 40 points and Pella, rated No. 7, finished with a winning score of 25. Nevada took third out of five teams with 69 points, Bondurant-Farrar was fourth with 108 and Boone tallied a score of 154.


Lucy Schaffer was phenomenal as the lead runner for the North Polk girls. The freshman clocked in at 21 minutes, 26 seconds to take second behind Pella’s Caroline McMartin, who completed the course in 20:39.


Kennedy Wendel and Sophie Schaffer also placed in the top 10 for North Polk. Wendel took sixth in 22:13 and Schaffer ran a 22:23 to finish ninth.


Addie Cooper and Izzie Bergstrom finished just outside the top 10 as the other scored runners for North Polk. Cooper ran an 11th-place time of 22:49 and Bergstrom was 12th in 23:22.


Abi Zimmer and Hailey Volz also ran varsity for North Polk. Both runners ended up in the top 20 as Zimmer placed 14th in 23:45 and Volz took 19th in 24:06.


In the boys’ race, North Polk scored 107 points to beat Boone by seven points for fourth. Bondurant-Farrar won with 31 points, No. 9 Pella came in second with 37 and No. 14 Nevada took third with a score of 78.


Gabe Drake led the North Polk boys’ with a strong 13th-place 5-kilometer time of 19:27. Noah Church also placed in the top 20 with a 19th-place showing of 20:04.


Sam Carstensen finished with a 21st-place time of 20:08. Seth Subra ran a 20:52 to place 30th and Nathan Crabb a 21:13 to take 32nd, completing the Comet scoring.


Bryce Houser and Will Lesher also ran varsity for the Comet boys. Houser ran a 21:27 to end up 34th and Lesher placed 42nd after clocking in at 22:22.


Pella’s Drew Van Hauen easily won the boys’ race in 17:57. Bondurant-Farrar’s Seth Vanbaale was second in 18:31, and Nevada’s Dalton Baker was third with an 18:33 showing.
