PLEASANT HILL — The North Polk volleyball team endured a rough outing against larger schools at the Southeast Polk Invitational Saturday in Pleasant Hill.
The Comets went 0-4 in the tournament, falling to 9-10 on the season. North Polk, a Class 3A school, went up against three 5A teams — Indianola, West Des Moines Valley and Southeast Polk — and one 3A program in Red Oak.
North Polk lost a tense thriller to Southeast Polk in three sets. The Comets won the first set in a 25-23 battle, lost the second by the same score and then suffered a 19-17 setback in a down-to-the-wire rally game.
North Polk dropped both sets against Indianola (21-13, 21-17), Valley (21-7, 21-9) and Red Oak (22-20, 21-16).
Nora Aschoff had 26 digs, 13 kills, two aces and one block and Sydney Anderson 17 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and four aces for North Polk during the tournament. Hailey Steffen contributed 32 assists, 19 digs, two kills and one assist and Jaedon Murphy 14 digs, 13 kills, three blocks and one assist.
Jalen Heintz tacked on 17 digs, one kill and one ace; Chloe Dougherty 12 digs, one kill and one ace; Liz Turk 12 kills, three digs and two blocks and Bella Rademacher 11 kills, five digs and four blocks. Emily Byrd finished with nine assists and four digs in two matches, Alex Drent three assists and two digs in two matches; Sadie Long one kill and block apiece in two matches and Katie Scott 15 digs in one match.
ALLEMAN — North Polk cruised to decisive victories over both Grand View Christian and Newton at a home triangular match Sept. 6 in Alleman.
The Comets whipped both teams in straight sets. They defeated Grand View Christian by 25-17 and 25-11 scores and Newton by 25-9 and 25-11 decisions.
North Polk tallied 29 kills and only seven errors in 96 attacks against Grand View Christian. The Comets also picked up six aces and four blocks.
Sydney Anderson led a balanced North Polk attack with seven kills, two digs and one block. Nora Aschoff had six kills, eight digs, three assists and one ace; Jaedon Murphy five kills and two digs; Liz Turk five kills and one dig; Bella Rademacher three kills, two blocks and two digs and Sadie Long two kills and one block.
Emily Byrd picked up 15 assists, five digs and two aces and Hailey Steffen five assists, four digs and one kill at setter. Katie Scott chimed in with 15 digs, three assists and three aces at libero and Jalen Heintz added four digs and Hailey Becker one.
The Comets only had three attack errors and they compiled 21 kills in the win over Newton. North Polk also finished with seven aces in the match.
Aschoff paced the Comets against the Cardinals with eight digs, seven kills and two aces. Turk delivered five kills and two digs; Murphy four kills, four digs and two blocks; Anderson four kills, two digs and one block and Rademacher one kill, two blocks and two digs.
Steffen finished with 10 assists and two digs, Byrd eight assists and five digs and Scott seven digs and two aces. Heintz chipped in five digs and one ace and Chloe Dougherty two digs and aces apiece.
