ALLEMAN — Early big plays on both sides of the ball sparked a 39-14 North Polk victory over Grinnell Friday at Alleman.
North Polk (2-0) came up with an interception right off the bat on defense, and took immediate advantage of the turnover as Colten Parkins found Quinten Sommers on a 46-yard touchdown pass just over one minute into the game.
From there the rout was on as North Polk put up 22 points in the first quarter and led 25-0 at the half. The Comets finished with 366 yards and did a great job mixing it up with 202 yards rushing and 164 through the air.
Defensively, North Polk gave up 266 yards, just 90 rushing, and forced two turnovers. The dominant performance helped the Comets overcome nine penalties to enact revenge on a team that defeated them in overtime last season.
“Great to get out to a 2-0 start,” North Polk head football coach Evan Groepper said. “We made a lot of progress from game one, cleaning up some the of the penalties and turnovers.”
Parkins completed 9 of 14 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions and he also ran for 30 yards and a score. Sommers caught two passes for 61 yards, Ryan Fausch made four grabs for 56 yards and Caleb Lomica corralled a 25-yard touchdown reception.
Thomas Jones had strong game running the ball for North Polk. Jones finished with 85 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries.
Logan Engebretson followed up a 125-yard performance in the opening win over Nevada with 57 yards and a score versus Grinnell. J.D. Elefson chipped in 30 yards rushing on just three carries.
Defensively, Lomica made eight tackles and assisted on a sack, Mark Cox put up 3.5 tackles and 1.5 sacks, Parkins delivered four tackles, Trevor Mathis picked off a pass and Eddy Burt came up with a sack.
Drew Coffman threw for 180 yards and a touchdown and ran for 63 yards and a score for Grinnell. Tanner Strand made two catches for 90 yards for a Tiger team that fell to 1-1.
North Polk hosts Winterset (0-2) this Friday.
“We still have a long ways to go, but we are excited for the challenge this week against a physical Winterset team,” Groepper said.
The Comets’ game with the Huskies starts at 7:30 p.m. in Alleman.
