MURRAY — The Collins-Maxwell football team came out flat against Murray Friday and the Spartans never recovered in a 44-6 road loss.

Murray raced out to a 38-0 lead at the half. The Mustangs scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and two in the second, and Collins-Maxwell struggled moving the ball on the ground and through the air.

“We didn’t get off the bus ready to play,” Collins-Maxwell head football coach Cory Crnkovich said. “We talked all week about this being a business trip. There was no fire at the beginning of the game until we got down. We had plenty of chances to score, but we always had one or two guys not doing their jobs and it cost us big-time. There was no reason we couldn’t have won that game.”

Devin Slaughter threw two long touchdown passes to Josh Webb, ran one in from 17 yards out and returned a punt 65 yards for a score in the first half for Murray. Reece Held added a touchdown run and a punt return for a score on the night for the Mustangs.

Collins-Maxwell prevented a shutout with a big-play touchdown in the third quarter. Kadin Bennett hooked up with Brett Livesay for a 70-yard touchdown pass.

The long touchdown pass accounted for most of Collins-Maxwell’s offensive production. The Spartans were limited to 94 yards of total offense.

Bennett completed four passes for 79 yards and Livesay made two grabs for 73 yards. Caleb Fullerton added 28 yards rushing for the Spartans.

On defense, Fullerton made 12 tackles and Bennett added 10.5.

“Caleb Fullerton was all over the field on defense,” Crnkovich said. “He had 12 tackles. He tried doing everything he could to get us a win, but one guy isn’t going to win the game for us.”

Slaughter threw for 134 yards and ran for 34, Webb caught two passes for 116 yards and Held ran for 84 yards to pace Murray. The Mustangs improved to 2-0 with the win.

Collins-Maxwell fell to 0-3. The Spartans host AGWSR (0-2) this Friday.

“This week of practice our team has to come ready to work more than ever,” Crnkovich said. “We have to get this turned around.”

The game will start at 7 p.m. in Maxwell.
