COLLINS - The Collins-Maxwell football team was overpowered early by No. 4 Newell-Fonda and never recovered in a 53-14 loss Friday at Collins.

Bryce Coppock accounted for five touchdowns in the first half to give Newell-Fonda a 35-6 lead at the break

Coppock threw touchdown passes of 60 and 30 yards to Damon Bartek, added rushing touchdowns from 30 and three yards out and returned a punt 50 yards for a score.

“We need to be more disciplined — period,” Collins-Maxwell head football coach Cory Crnkovich said.

“Our defense had them third-and-10 twice in the first quarter, and we give up big plays for touchdowns because we had guys not reading their keys.

“We also need to do a better job on special teams. We gave up a punt return because we didn’t have guys playing discipline football.”

Collins-Maxwell (0-2) put one score on the board in the first half.

The Spartans added a second touchdown in the second half and held Newell-Fonda to 18 points over the final 24 minutes.

“We improved a lot from Week 0,” Crnkovich said. “We had guys come back that following Monday ready to work.”

The Spartans gave up 357 yards. The defense was hurt by mistakes on special teams and poor field position.

“The score might not have showed how our defense really played,” Crnkovich said. “We gave up a pick-six and we also gave up a punt return as well. Plus we set them up in good field position with our turnovers.”

Rylee Scott made 6.5 tackles, Caleb Fullerton six, John Kasper 5.5, Simon McKinney and Weston Kahler five apiece and Kayden McKinney 4.5 for the Spartans.

On offense, Collins-Maxwell had 205 yards. The Spartans did well through the air, but only had 45 yards rushing.

“Offensively, turnovers killed our drives,” Crnkovich said. “We had two or three fumbles while we were marching down the field. We also didn’t run the ball effectively all game.”

Kadin Bennett completed 5 of 6 passes for 90 yards and one touchdown, McKinney connected on his only pass attempt for 50 yards and Mason Markley was 3 of 9 for 20 yards through the air for Collins-Maxwell.

Kahler hauled in a 70-yard touchdown reception. A.J. Smith caught the 50-yard pass from McKinney, Brett Livesay made six grabs for 35 yards and Kasper finished with one catch for five yards.

Fullerton ran for 35 yards. Markley picked up a rushing touchdown.

Coppock threw for 142 yards and two scores and ran for 114 and three touchdowns to lead Newell-Fonda in its season opener. Bartek had the two touchdown receptions totaling 115 yards and he also returned an interception for a score.

Collins-Maxwell faces Murray this Friday in its first road game. Murray won its opener over Essex Friday, 70-28.

“We know what’s at stake if we want to turn this thing around,” Crnkovich said. “I expect (the players) to have the same attitude as last week and they need to keep striving to get better. Each week we have to learn from our mistakes and keeping growing.”

Collins-Maxwell’s game with Murray will start at 7 p.m. in Murray.
