ALLEMAN - The North Polk baseball team rallied for a 3-2 victory over Greene County in eight innings Monday at Alleman.
The Comes fell behind 2-0 through 5 ½ innings. They tied the score in the bottom of the sixth when Jake Johnson hit an RBI double, then took third on the throw and made his way home on a wild pitch.
Neither team scored in the seventh to force an extra frame.
Comet freshman Joe Husak blanked Greene County in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Jeff Lamp singled with one out, Mark Cox walked and Johnson singled to load the bases.
Mason Russell drove in the winning run with a single to left.
The victory wrapped up the Heart of Iowa Conference title for North Polk. The Comets finished 12-2 in the conference and went to 20-8 overall.
Husak threw three scoreless innings and gave up one hit and three walks with four strikeouts to get the win in relief. Colten Parkins allowed one run on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts in three innings as the Comet starter and Clark Hood surrendered one run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout in two innings.
Johnson and Lamp both ended up 2-for-4 at the plate. Cox, Russell and Payton Johnson each had one hit.
Bryce Hoyle took the loss for Greene County. Hoyle was tagged for three runs on five hits and three walks and he also picked up three strikeouts in 7 ⅓ innings.
Tom Gannon was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Nick Breon doubled, scored and drove in a run for the Rams.

AMES - North Polk had trouble make plays in the seventh inning during a 2-1 loss to Ames Saturday at Ames.
The game was a great pitcher’s duel between North Polk’s Colby Cupp and Ames’ Nate Griffin, with the two teams tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.
Chris Fowles singled to lead off the Ames half of the seventh. Fowles moved up a base on a North Polk error, Jack Rogers followed and Carter Biedenbach reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.
Kaden Petersen then singled in Fowles with the winning run. The loss put North Polk, the No. 8 team in Class 3A, at 19-8 on the season.
Cupp gave up two earned runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in a losing effort. He also doubled, walked twice, stole a base and drove in a run on offense.
North Polk finished with just three hits off Griffin. Reid Sommers singled and scored, Mason Russell singled once and stole two bases, Sam Kvidera walked once and Colten Parkins stole a base for the Comets.
Griffin tallied an impressive 13 strikeouts and only walked three batters. Fowles and Biedenbach each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Little Cyclones.

JEFFERSON - Dominant pitching from Jake Johnson and a late offensive spurt gave North Polk a 2-0 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over Greene County Friday at Jefferson.
Jake Johnson fired a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and just one walk to pick up the victory and help North Polk improve to 11-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. He was helped by a steady Comet defense that went without any errors.
North Polk struggled to get anything going on offense against Greene County pitcher Ben Wilkens for most of the game. But the Comets broke through with a run in the sixth and added another one in the seventh, giving Johnson all the support he needed.
Sam Kvidera doubled with one out and pinch runner Sutton Sears scored on an error for North Polk in the sixth. In the seventh, Jeff Lamp and Mark Cox singled and Lamp made his way home on a single by Mason Russell.
Kvidera was 2-for-3 and Lamp, Cox, Russell, Colten Parkins and Reid Sommers all singled once for North Polk at the plate. Parkins and Payton Johnson each picked up one steal.
Wilkens struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter, going all seven innings for Greene County. Nick Breon and Austin Delp each singled once for the Rams at the plate.

STATE CENTER - North Polk came on strong in the fifth inning to roll past West Marshall, 11-3, July 3 at State Center.
The Comets trailed 3-1 going into the fifth. They exploded for six runs in the fifth to take charge and tacked on four more unanswered runs in the seventh, capped by a two-run homer from Jeff Lamp.
Lamp went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs; Colten Parkins was 2-for-5 with a steal, two runs and three RBIs and Colby Cupp finished 2-for-4 with two runs for North Polk on offense. Payton Johnson doubled, walked and scored twice; Mark Cox was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI; Jake Johnson singled and stole a base; Mason Russell singled and Clark Hood walked three times and drove in two runs.
Joe Husak threw five scoreless innings and gave up three hits with four strikeouts and two walks as the winning pitcher in relief. Sutton Sears allowed three runs — two earned — on five hits with two strikeouts in two innings.
Parker Hulbert surrendered four runs on two hits and a walk in ⅓ of an inning as the losing West Marshall pitcher. Alex Dickey singled and drove in two runs and Jake Tollefson was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs for the Trojans.

DES MOINES - North Polk was hurt by a shaky defensive performance in a 6-2 loss to Saydel July 2 at Saydel High School in Des Moines.
The Comets committed five errors, suffering just their second Heart of Iowa Conference setback — both coming at the hands of Saydel.
Saydel jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings and tacked on two more scores in the fifth. Both North Polk runs came in the top of the sixth inning.
Colten Parkins took the loss, giving up six runs — just two earned — on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts in five innings. Colby Cupp threw the sixth inning for North Polk and didn’t give up a run, hit or walk.
Parkins doubled and scored and Mark Cox and Clark Hood were both 1-for-3 with an RBI at the plate for North Polk. Cupp and Payton Johnson also singled for the Comets.
Maxx Stanton went the distance for Saydel. He struck out 10 and walked just one.
T.J. Stephenson doubled, walked and scored three times; Cash Lee doubled and scored and Stanton and Cal Gebhart each drove in two runs for the Eagles.
