ALLEMAN - The North Polk baseball team overcame defensive mistakes and a late comeback attempt by Prairie City-Monroe Friday at Alleman, topping the Mustangs by a 3-2 decision.


North Polk, the No. 10 team in Class 3A, took a 3-0 lead after scoring twice in the third inning and once in the fifth.


Mason Russell singled and scored on a double by Reed Sommers, and Colby Cupp singled in Sommers for the Comets in the third. In the fifth inning, Sommers singled and pinch runner Sutton Sears made his way home on a passed ball. PCM answered with two runs in the sixth.


Dane Owens reached on an error, was moved over to third on a Reed Worth double and then scored on a Preston Van Wyk single for the first Mustang run. Worth scored on another Comet error.


Mustang pitcher Noah Henkenius shut out North Polk in the bottom of the sixth to keep the momentum going for his team. But in the top of the seventh, Comet hurler Clark Hood overcame a one-out single by Olin Meinders to end the PCM rally attempt and put North Polk at 17-6 overall and 10-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


Hood overcame four North Polk errors to get the win. He went all seven innings and surrendered two unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.


Sommers was 2-for-2 with a double, run and RBI and Cupp finished 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Comets on offense. Russell singled and scored and Payton Johnson and Jeff Lamp both had a single.


Henkenius gave up two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk in a losing effort for PCM.


Meinders went 2-for-3 at the plate and Henkenius, Worth, Van Wyk each had a hit.

STORY CITY - North Polk used great pitching and defense to sweep a doubleheader with Roland-Story Wednesday at Story City.


The Comets downed the Norsemen 11-0 in the first game and 6-1 in the nightcap to improve to 16-6 overall and 9-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


North Polk held Roland-Story to just four hits in each game and only committed one error over the 14 innings of play.


Sutton Sears pitched North Polk to victory in the first game. He went all seven innings and struck out four with two walks to earn the shutout.


North Polk scored once in the first inning, twice in the third and sixth frames and three times in both the fifth and seventh.


The Comets ended up with 11 hits and they also took advantage of eight walks and four steals.


Jeff Lamp was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and RBIs apiece; Colten Parkins ended up 2-for-3 with three runs, a walk, steal and RBI; Jake Johnson ended up 2-for-3 with one walk, run and RBI apiece and Clark Hood was also 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Mark Cox doubled, scored and drove in two runs; Mason Russell was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a steal; Joe Husak singled and drove in a run; Payton Johnson walked twice, stole a base and scored three times and Colby Cupp walked twice and picked up one steal and run apiece.


Jakob Pitman gave up six runs on four hits and eight walks with three strikeouts in 4 ⅔ innings as the losing Roland-Story pitcher.


In the nightcap, North Polk broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning.


The Comets scored two more times in the sixth and coasted home, finishing with six hits on offense and going error-free on defense.


Parkins gave up one run on three hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in five innings as the winning pitcher.


Husak picked up the save after tossing two scoreless innings and giving up just one hit with five strikeouts.


Payton Johnson was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs and RBIs apiece and Jake Johnson finished 2-for-3 with a steal and a run to lead North Polk offensively in the second game. Cupp singled, scored and knocked in two runs; Lamp finished 1-for-3 with an RBI; Hood walked and scored and Russell also crossed the plate once.


Zach Twedt surrendered four runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in five innings as the losing Roland-Story pitcher. Nathan Bell hit a solo homer in the first inning to account for the Norsemen’s only run of the day.

ALLEMAN - Tremendous pitching and early spurt on offense helped North Polk overcome some fielding issues to post a 4-1 victory over South Hamilton June 25 at Alleman.


Jake Johnson and Joe Husak combined to limit South Hamilton to four hits, helping the No. 10 (Class 3A) Comets improve to 14-6 overall and 7-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


Johnson gave up all four South Hamilton hits and the one Hawk run and tallied six strikeouts and two walks in six innings to earn the victory.


Husak quickly retired South Hamilton in the seventh, not giving up a hit or walk, to get the save.


South Hamilton scored its run the top of the second when C.J. Hewitt scored on an error. But the Comets came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning after Sam Kvidera connected on a two-run single with two outs.


In the bottom of the third, North Polk added another run on an RBI single from Mason Russell.


The Comets tacked on an additional run in the fourth when Colby Cupp walked and scored on a single by Colten Parkins.


Cupp, Kvidera and Johnson each finished 2-for-3 and Parkins, Russell, Jeff Lamp and Mark Cox each had a single for North Polk offensively. Lamp and Sutton Sears each scored one run and Cupp, Parkins and Sears picked up one steal apiece.


Hewitt, D.J. Klonglan, Mateo Balderas and Cole Berg each singled once for South Hamilton.


Garrett Grady was the losing Hawk pitcher, going all six innings and allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
