BOONE - The North Polk softball team went 2-1 at the Boone Invitational Saturday with wins over Chariton and Boone and a loss to Des Moines Christian.


The Comets, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A, whipped Chariton by a 12-1 score in five innings and won a 1-0 pitcher’s duel with Boone. They were handed a 3-1 loss by Des Moines Christian, the No. 5 team in 2A, as their season record went to 17-6 at the conclusion of the tournament.


North Polk finished with 11 hits in the victory over Chariton. Sydney Anderson was 3-for-3 with three steals, a double, run and five RBIs; Ellie Owen went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs, one steal and two RBIs and Rebecca Ley finished 2-for-3 with two steals and two runs to lead the Comets.


Hannah Pals homered and drove in two runs; Sydney Albaugh doubled, stole a base, scored twice and drove in two runs and Trisha Sporra was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs. Paige Sandberg scored one run and Sophie Swygman drew a walk.


Bailey Hougham was the winning pitcher. Hougham struck out six and gave up one earned run on six hits and a walk in five innings.


Brenna Shriver gave up seven earned runs on six hits and a walk with one strikeout in two innings as the losing Chariton pitcher. Virginia Smith was 2-for-2 with a run for the Chargers on offense.


Pals threw a tremendous game to lead North Polk past Boone. She fired a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and two walks.


North Polk gave Pals the only run she needed in support during the top of the second inning. The Comets finished with four hits off Boone hurler Emma Dighton.


Hailey Steffen singled and scored and Ley was 1-for-3 with an RBI against Boone. Albaugh and Owen each singled once.


Dighton had four strikeouts and no walks. Caitlynne Shadle and Zoey Hightshoe each singled once for the Toreadors.


North Polk had a tough time hitting in the loss to Des Moines Christian. The Comets only tallied three hits off Lion pitcher Maren Judisch, who finished with seven strikeouts and six walks.


Des Moines Christian scored all three of its runs in the top of the third inning. North Polk’s only score came in the bottom of the fourth.


Pals doubled, walked and drove in Steffen, who finished the game with a single. Ley also singled and stole two bases, Owen and Hougham each drew two walks and Sporra picked up one free pass.


Swygman was the losing pitcher. She gave up three earned runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 3 ⅓ innings.


Pals tossed the other 3 ⅔ innings, giving up three hits and striking out nine with one walk.


Emma Veenstra was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead Des Moines Christian offensively.

ALLEMAN - North Polk gradually pulled away from Greene County for a convincing 10-0 victory over the Rams in six innings Friday at Alleman.


The Comets went up 1-0 with a run in the second inning, then scored at least two times in each of the next four innings to end the game early and go to 8-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. Bailey Hougham and Sophie Swygman combined to limit the Rams to four hits.


Hougham got the win after giving up two hits and picking up one strikeout and walk apiece in three innings. Swygman also went three innings, allowed two hits and she also struck out five with one walk.


North Polk totaled 13 hits on offense. The Comets had five doubles and two home runs.


Hannah Pals was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and three RBIs; Ellie Owen 3-for-4 with a double and a run; Hougham 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs and Rebecca Ley 2-for-3 with a double and a run. Sydney Albaugh homered, walked, scored two runs and knocked in a pair; Hailey Steffen doubled, walked and scored; Sydney Anderson was 1-for-4 with an RBI; Trisha Sporra walked twice and scored; Noelle Hoffman walked and scored and Jenna Fagen also crossed the plate once.


Samantha Hardaway gave up four earned runs with a walk and a strikeout in four innings as the losing Greene County pitcher. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

ROLAND - North Polk scored a huge Heart of Iowa Conference victory June 18 in Roland, handing No. 9 Roland-Story its first conference loss, 2-0, in a 12-inning marathon.


North Polk, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A, had 13 hits, but struggled to string anything together against Norse hurlers Sydney Mathis and Riley Holmgren. But outstanding pitching from Hannah Pals and Sophie Swygman and great defense enabled the Comets to grind it out until the offense came through in the top of the 12th.


Pals and Swygman combined for an amazing 21 strikeouts in the win.


Pals was the winning pitcher in relief, giving up just one hit and walk apiece and striking out eight in five innings. Swygman got the start, allowing just four hits and a walk and fanning an impressive 13 batters in seven innings.


Sydney Albaugh was the hero offensively for North Polk, going 2-for-5 with a double and driving in both Comet runs in the 12th. Ellie Owen was 3-for-6 with a double and a run; Rebecca Ley went 2-for-5 with a run; Sydney Anderson finished 3-for-6; Hailey Steffen ended up 2-for-5 and Bailey Hougham doubled.


Holmgren took the loss in relief, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in six innings. Mathis surrendered six hits and struck out three with no walks in six scoreless innings of work.


Allisyn Coghlan doubled, Hailey Louw was 2-for-3 with a walk and Holmgren and Madison Friest each singled for Roland-Story.
