COLLINS - Collins-Maxwell took a huge step toward clinching the Iowa Star Conference title in its first season in the conference with a 1-0 victory over Clarksville in a battle of top-10 Class 1A teams Friday at Collins.

The Spartans, ranked No. 2, scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. That’s all pitcher Mikayla Houge needed as she limited the Indians to two hits, helping Collins-Maxwell go to 11-0 in the conference and dropping Clarksville to 13-1.

“The game was well-played by both teams,” Collins-Maxwell head softball coach Troy Houge said.

Mikayla Houge struck out an impressive 14 batters and gave up only two hits and no walks. The Spartan defense was also strong behind her, helping keep the Indians off the board.

Alexis Houge scored the game’s only run. She singled, stole two bases and made her way home on a sacrifice bunt by Mikayla.

Katie Camp, Hannah Caple and Ella Kahler each had one hit for Collins-Maxwell.
