DES MOINES - Collins-Maxwell gained a huge measure of revenge and picked up its most impressive victory of the season June 12 with a 3-1 road win over Des Moines Christian at Des Moines.

Collins-Maxwell entered the game ranked No. 2 in Class 1A and Des Moines Christian was rated No. 2 in 2A.

Des Moines Christian was also the team that spoiled Collins-Maxwell-Baxter’s bid to return to state last season with a 4-0 win in the 2A regional semifinals.

In the rematch, Mikayla Houge fired a two-hitter and Collins-Maxwell picked up eight hits.

“We won a tough game,” Collins-Maxwell head softball coach Troy Houge said.

The Spartans scored a run in the third when Mikayla Houge doubled with two outs, and pinch runner Trinity Stover made it home on a Hannah Caple single.

In the top of the fifth, Emma Kahler singled and scored on a squeeze play from Houge, then Stover made her way home on an error.

Mikayla Houge struck out 11 batters and only walked one in an impressive performance on the mound.

The only Des Moines Christian run came courtesy of an Olivia Penland solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Mikayla was 2-for-4 offensively with an RBI. Caple, Alexis Houge, Katie Camp, Reagan Franzen, Kahler and Ella Kahler each had one hit for the Spartans.

Penland took the loss for Des Moines Christian. She struck out three and didn’t have a walk in five innings.
