In one final meet of the high school season, senior track stars from across three different states participated in the annual Senior All-Star Spotlight Meet in Dubuque Iowa on Saturday, June 9.
The meet gave senior track athletes from across the states of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois a chance to compete on the same track. Three Waukee track stars and a Perry phenom helped Team Iowa capture the crown with a team point total of 103.
Fresh off of their third straight Iowa High School state crown, the Waukee Warriors had three athletes participate Saturday including future University of Iowa track stars Syndey Winger and Lily Campbell along with Anna Keplinger.
Straight from a magical season, the Drake Relays and Iowa High School state champion Sydney Winger. After claiming a Drake Relays record and setting an Iowa High School state meet record, Winger took on the 100 meter hurdles once last time as a high schooler. As she did throughout the season, Winger topped the field and took first with a time of 14.40 seconds, earning five team points.
Winger was also involved in several relay events including the 4x100 meter relay team that took third with a time of 50.12 seconds. The team consisted of Cassie Yardley, Maria Gorham, and 2016 state high jump champion Megan Durbin. Winger was also part of the 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay team that nearly broke the prior meet record after they clocked in with a time of 1:02.81. They earned five team points for the first place finish.
After finishing second at state in the 800 meter run and a key component of the title winning 4x800 meter relay team, Lily Campbell was involved in two similar events Saturday. Campbell participated in the 800 meter run where the distance phenom bested the field by nearly seven full seconds, clocking in at 2:18.82. Campbell also took part in the sprint medley relay team which placed that not only placed first, but took down the prior All-Star meet record by nearly three full seconds.
Fellow Waukee senior Anna Keplinger was also a multi-event participant taking part in the 100 meter hurdles, the 4x200 meter relay, and the 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay events. Keplinger, who was also part of the Waukee shuttle hurdle relay team to earn a state crown, partook in the same event Saturday and her team finished third with a time of 1:03.70. Keplinger was also involved in the 4x200 meter team that took third at the All-Star meet with a time of 1:49.38.
There was one lone Perry High School representative which was senior speedster Sydney Vancil. Vancil was involved in the 4x100 meter relay, the 4x400 meter relay, and the 4x800 meter relay. The 4x100 meter relay team that Vancil was a part of at Perry clocked in a mark of 57.13 as the teams best. On Saturday, Vancil and her teammates Paige Kvale, Ellie Osterberger, and Regan Sylvester clocked in a time of 52.86. Vancil was second leg of the 4x400 meter relay team that took third place courtesy of 4:08.34. Vancil was also the second leg in the 4x800 meter relay team that took the top spot with a time of 10:26.20.
