ANKENY - The North Polk baseball team split two games at the Tim Heggen Invitational Saturday in Ankeny as the Comets whipped Burlington and fell to Ankeny.
North Polk (6-2) trounced Burlington by a 12-0 score in six innings. A huge seven-run sixth inning enabled the Comets to end the game an inning early.
North Polk dominated the game offensively with only seven hits — all singles. The Comets did a great job capitalizing on their opportunities and they benefited from eight walks and three steals.
Colby Cupp was 3-for-4 with one run, steal and RBI apiece; Jake Johnson was 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI and three runs; Reid Sommers was 1-for-3 with a walk, run and two RBIs and Tyler Sinclair finished 1-for-2 with one run, a walk and RBI to lead North Polk at the plate. Colten Parkins singled, scored, stole a base and drove in a run; Jeff Lamp walked twice, scored two runs and stole a base; Mason Russell scored and drove in a run; Payton Johnson and Clark Hood each scored once and Mark Cox and Sam Kvidera each drove in one run.
Sutton Sears was the winning pitcher. Sears was brilliant, firing a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks going all six innings, and he was backed by defense that went without an error.
Ankeny handed North Polk a 9-1 loss.
The Comets only had three hits to 15 for Ankeny. Ankeny took a 3-0 lead into the sixth, then plated five runs in the inning to put the game away.
Payton Johnson doubled and drove in a run, Lamp walked and singled and Kvidera also had a single. Brad Chiles walked once, Tyler Sinclair scored the Comets’ run and Parkins stole a base.
Cupp took the loss after allowing three runs — two earned — on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in five innings.

URBANDALE - A poor first inning and a lack of production with the bat resulted in the first loss of the year for North Polk versus Urbandale Friday at Urbandale.
The Comets fell by a 10-0 score in five innings. Urbandale scored seven times in the first inning and North Polk only had one hit all game.

Clark Hood surrendered eight runs — six earned — on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 3 ⅔ innings as the losing Comet pitcher. Grant Garwood gave up one hit and walk apiece with one strikeout in four innings as the winning Jayhawk pitcher.

ALLEMAN - North Polk used a huge third inning in the first game and came on strong late in the nightcap to sweep Nevada in convincing fashion May 30 at Alleman.
The Comets won the opener by a 13-3 score in five innings and claimed a 12-4 victory in the second game. The two victories put North Polk at 3-0 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
North Polk put 11 runs on the board in the third inning of the opener. The Comets added one run apiece in each of the next two innings to easily withstand a three-run Nevada fifth to end the game early.
“It was kind of slow, then we started to hit,” North Polk pitcher Jake Johnson said. “I threw pretty well. I think I threw 97 pitches — which was not good — but other than that it went pretty well.”
Johnson gave up three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks, going all five innings to get the win. He was also 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece as part of North Polk’s 10-hit attack on offense.
Payton Johnson was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs in the game. He said the balance and depth of the Comet lineup makes it tough for opposing teams to get an out, which Nevada found out in the third inning.
“I think we’re very efficient all the way through our lineup this year,” Payton Johnson said. “We don’t really struggle hitting the ball anywhere in our lineup.”
Reid Sommers tripled to ignite the big Comet third inning and he later doubled in the inning. He finished 2-for-2 with two runs and RBIs apiece.
Mason Russell was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Colby Cupp doubled and drove in two runs for North Polk in the win.
In the nightcap, North Polk broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the fifth inning. The Comets added four more scores in the sixth to take charge.
Joe Husak came on in relief of Cupp to get the victory. The freshman picked up the first varsity win of his career, giving up just one run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 4 ⅓ innings.
“My curveball was working for me and my fastball worked,” Husak said. “I knew I had my defense behind me, so I just had to throw strikes. It was pretty fun.”
Jake Johnson was 2-for-4 in the second game. He drove in three runs — all coming on a bases-clearing double in the top of the sixth.
Payton finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Cupp was 2-for-3 with two walks, three steals and three runs. Colten Parkins singled, walked three times, drove in a run and scored twice and Sam Kvidera was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
