ALLEMAN - A big sixth-inning outburst gave the North Polk baseball team a 5-1 victory over Pella May 24 at Alleman.


The Comets scored all five of their runs in the sixth to easily overcome a 1-0 deficit and keep their record perfect on the season at 3-0.


A Jake Johnson single sparked a two-out rally for North Polk in the bottom of the sixth.


Reid Sommers singled in Johnson for the first Comet run, Colby Cupp was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give North Polk the lead and Payton Johnson singled in two runs. An RBI single from Colten Parkins capped off the big Comet inning.


In the top of the seventh, Comet pitcher Sutton Sears overcame a one-out walk by striking out Drew Hillman and forcing Aaron Downs to ground out to third. Clark Hood then came in to retire Pella’s River Baker on strikes for the final out.


Sears gave up one earned run on five hits and just one walk with five strikeouts in 6 ⅔ innings as the winning pitcher. Parkins was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Cupp and Sommers both went 1-for-2 with one run, walk and RBI apiece for the Comets offensively.


Sam Kvidera went 2-for-2 with a run, Payton Johnson was 1-for-4 with two RBI, Jake Johnson singled and scored and Tyler Sinclair walked and scored for North Polk.


Downs gave up two runs on four hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts in 5 ⅔ innings as the losing pitcher for Pella. Ryan Mace went 2-for-3 with a double and a run to pace the Little Dutch on offense.

ALLEMAN - Two productive innings on offense, quality pitching and consistent fielding gave North Polk a 5-1 victory over Perry in its home opener May 22.


The Comets scored twice in the third inning and three times in the fourth, finishing with 10 hits for the game. They also went without an error on defense.


That was more than enough support for pitcher Colby Cupp, who tossed a four-hitter with six strikeouts and just one walk, going in the distance to earn the victory.


Cupp helped his own cause by doubling in North Polk’s first run in the third inning. Payton Johnson added an RBI single later in the inning.


In the fourth inning, Johnson singled in two more runs with two outs and Colten Parkins connected for an RBI double.


Johnson finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Jeff Lamp went 3-for-3 with a double and Sam Kvidera ended up 2-for-2 for the Comets at the plate. Cupp and Parkins both doubled and knocked in a run and Cupp also walked and scored once.


Jake Johnson added a single and a run, Reid Sommers walked and scored and Clark Hood scored two runs for the Comets.


Avery Meister allowed three earned runs on six hits with no walks or strikeouts in three innings as the losing Perry pitcher. Austin Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a run for the Bluejays on offense.

GILBERT - The depth of North Polk’s pitching staff was on full display in its season opener with Gilbert May 21 at Gilbert.


The Comets used three pitchers to blank the Tigers, 4-0.


Jake Johnson got the victory for North Polk after tossing five scoreless innings. He gave up three hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Colten Parkins threw one hitless inning with three strikeouts and two walks and Sutton Sears gave up one hit with three strikeouts and no walks in an inning of work.


North Polk finished with seven hits on offense. Mason Russell delivered the big blow with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning.


Reid Sommers went 3-for-3 with a double, run and RBI apiece for the Comets. Payton Johnson singled and scored, Jeff Lamp doubled and Colby Cupp singled once.


Easton Johnson allowed three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks in 5 2/3 innings as the losing pitcher for Gilbert. Ben Simodynes went 2-for-4, Nathan Chasey doubled once and walked twice and Matt Barragy had a single.
