AMES - A strong start didn’t hold up for the Ballard baseball team in a 5-4 loss to Ames May 24 at Ames.
The Bombers took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. Ballard scored a run in the second inning and then put three runs on the board in the third.
But Ames came up with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to move in front. Ballard was kept off the board over the final four innings, falling to 2-2 on the season.
Isaac Schafbuch was 2-for-2 with a double, walk, two runs and an RBI and Nolan Payne went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Ballard’s 10-hit attack on offense. Reece Huen was 2-for-4; Cody Wolfe singled and scored; Kade Reinertson, Jack Luster and Codey Erickson each picked up a single; Tanner Brock walked and drove in a run and Clay Estrem scored once.
Schafbuch was the losing pitcher in relief. He gave up two unearned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk in two innings of work.
Wolfe was the starting Bomber pitcher. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts in four innings.

OGDEN - Great pitching and early production on offense carried Ballard to a 4-2 victory over Ogden May 23 at Ogden.
Nic Edwards limited Ogden to four hits and only gave up two runs, one earned, with nine strikeouts and two walks in 6 2/3 innings as the winning Bomber pitcher. Hersch Maxey got the final out, giving up one hit.
Isaac Schafbuch was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and a steal and Tanner Brock also tripled and drove in two runs. Jack Luster went 3-for-4 with a double and a run, Cody Wolfe was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Kade Reinertson finished 2-for-4, Reece Huen picked up one hit and Clay Estrem scored once.

SLATER - Ballard dropped a 5-3 heartbreaker to Saydel in its home opener May 22 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.
The Bombers rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the score by the end of the sixth inning, only to see Saydel come right back with two runs in the top of the seventh. Ballard was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, suffering its first loss of the season.
For Ballard, Reece Huen went 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI; Kade Reinertson finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jack Luster finished 2-for-3 with a walk to pace the Bombers.
Hersch Maxey ended up 1-for-3 with a run, walk, steal and RBI and Tanner Brock walked and singled for Ballard. Will Stalder scored a run, Clay Estrem walked and stole a base and Nolan Payne drew a walk.
Gannon Manfull took the loss on the mound after giving up two unearned runs on one hit with one strikeout and no walks in one inning of relief. Luster was the starting Bomber pitcher, surrendering three runs — two earned — on nine hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

GRIMES - A great night on the hill from Colin Anderson lifted Ballard past Dallas Center-Grimes, 3-1, in its season opener May 21 at Grimes.
Anderson gave up one run on just three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in six innings as the winning pitcher. Gannon Manfull didn’t allow a hit or walk in a scoreless inning of relief to pick up the save.
Ballard scored a run in the top of the first. DCG answered with a score in the second, but Ballard went back in front in the fifth and added its final run in the sixth.
Manfull was 2-for-3 with a run; Reece Huen singled, walked and scored and Kade Reinertson and Nolan Payne both singled and drove in a run for Ballard. Codey Erickson also walked, stole a base and scored.
