WILLIAMSBURG - A breakout season came to a close for the North Polk boys’ soccer team with a tough 2-1 loss to No. 6 Williamsburg in the Class 1A substate finals Saturday at Williamsburg.


North Polk’s only score came off an unassisted goal from Broc Hawkins. Williamsburg received two goals from Leighton Jones, and Matthew Cronquist and John Lundberg each had an assist for the Raiders.


Christopher Martinez made five saves at keeper for North Polk. Williamsburg goalie Joe Phillips was forced to make eight saves.


North Polk ended the best season in program history ranked No. 14 in 1A. The Comets finished with a 12-2 overall record after only going 4-10 a year ago.


Williamsburg advanced to state with a 13-3 record.


BENTON - North Polk took down Benton Community in a shootout during the Class 1A substate semifinals, 2-1, May 23 at Benton.


The Comets received goals from Jonas Suessenguth, Luke McCoy and Luke Hammond during the shootout. Broc Hawkins scored the North Polk goal in regulation off an assist from McCoy.


Keeper Christopher Martinez made one save during the game for the Comets. The win put North Polk at 12-1 on the season.


ALLEMAN - North Polk opened Class 1A substate play with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Pella Christian May 21 at Alleman.


The Comets received unassisted goals from Jonas Suessenguth and Keegan Dorr. North Polk finished the game with 13 shots on goal.
