PELLA - The North Polk boys’ tennis team ended its season of team competition with a 5-2 loss to Maharishi in the Class 1A substate round at the Pella Christian courts.


North Polk picked up two wins in singles play. The Comets dropped four singles matches and one in doubles play before the meet was called after Maharishi reached the five victories needed to win the meet.


Colby Cupp won the No. 5 singles match over Maharishi’s Karthik Vempatin in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-1. Ethan Knight gave the Comets a win over Maharishi’s Frank Li Wang by scores of 6-4 and 6-0 in the No. 6 singles match.


North Polk individual state qualifier Evan Moon faced a big challenge in the No. 1 singles match. Moon lost to last year’s Class 1A state runner-up Kai Vessey by scores of 6-1 and 6-3.


In doubles play, the Comets’ Knight and Alexander Panchenko won the first set of the No. 3 match against Maharishi’s Vempatin and Li Wang by a 6-3 score and led the second, 4-3, but the meet was called before the match could be completed.


The Comets ended with a 5-4 dual record.
