HUXLEY - North Polk used a tough defense to get past a gritty Ballard team, 2-0, in a girls’ soccer rivalry game May 10 at Huxley.
The Comets, ranked No. 8 in 1A, scored one goal and benefited from a Ballard own goal, both coming in the first half, as they improved to 7-3 on the season.
Katryn Halterman was responsible for North Polk’s goal. She had six of her team’s 12 shots and Danielle Bonewitz tallied three. Sydney Anderson only needed to make one save at keeper for the Comets to earn the shutout.
Ballard fell to 7-5 with the loss. Sierra Knight made 10 saves at keeper and Avery Anderson, Olivia Dee, Samantha Mosher and Cassie Smith fired off one shot apiece for the Bombers.
