BROOKLYN - The Collins-Maxwell boys had one individual punch his ticket to state in two events and the Spartan girls celebrated qualifying in the shuttle hurdle relay following the Class 1A state qualifying coed track meet May 10 in Brooklyn.

Carter Fricke is headed to the blue oval in Des Moines for the Collins-Maxwell boys after winning the 400-meter dash and qualifying based on time in the 200.

“I’m happy for Carter for qualifying in the 200 and 400,” Collins-Maxwell head boys’ track coach Cole Billerbeck said. “He has worked hard his whole career and was a great leader for us all season. He deserves to end his high school career running at state.”

Fricke completed the 400 in 52.89 seconds to beat the :53.38 run by Meskwaki’s Taurice Grant for first at the qualifying meet. Fricke’s time ranks 16th among all 1A qualifiers.

In the 200, Fricke crossed the finish line with a time of :23.68 to place third behind the :22.50 effort by Montezuma’s Jordan Bender and the :23.39 time by Iowa Valley’s Joe Zuber. Fricke is rated 22nd among 1A qualifiers in the event.

Fricke also took fifth in the 100 with a time of :11.69. He joined Caleb Fullerton, Drake Ross and A.J. Smith in giving the Spartans a fifth-place time of 1:39.54 in the sprint medley relay.

As a team, the Collins-Maxwell boys scored 50 points to place sixth out of 14 teams. Belle Plaine won with 105 points and Lynnville-Sully took second with a score of 101.

“Very proud of the way the guys competed at the meet,” Billerbeck said. “We were placed in a very tough (qualifying meet), but the guys stepped up to the challenge and had a lot of events run their best times of the season, which is all you can ask for as a coach.”

Brett Livesay took fifth in the 110 high hurdles for Collins-Maxwell with a time of :16.45 and sixth in the high jump with a jump of five feet, eight inches. Noah Rhoades, Mitchell Bienfang, Frank Sposeto IV and Max Van Maanen teamed to give the Spartans a fourth-place showing of 9:22.12 in the 4 X 800.

Fullerton, Smith, Bienfang and Rhoades finished fifth in the distance medley after clocking in at 4:08.51. Drake Ross, Fullerton Kadin Bennett and Smith turned in a sixth-place time of 1:39.23 in the 4 X 200.

The Collins-Maxwell girls took 11th out of 14 teams with 30 points. The Spartans totaled seven top-six performances.

“We kinda put all our eggs into one basket tonight,” Collins-Maxwell head girls’ track coach Jerry Meinerts said. “We knew as individuals we weren’t going to qualify, but if we stack some of our relays, we might have an outside chance to punch our ticket to state. The only drawback to doing that is that you aren’t going to score as many points. But, I would rather have some relays qualify than finish third or fourth as a team. So, with that, we did have three relays run their fastest times of the season tonight.”

The Spartan girls’ shuttle hurdle team of Gracie Cheville, Josie Wierson, Shasta Moody and Brianda Bane took sixth at the qualifying meet with a time of 1:11.79. But it was against a terrific field of competition, with BCLUW (1:08.30), Lynnville-Sully (1:08.35), BGM (1:09.59), Belle Plaine (1:10.55) and North Mahaska (1:10.75) rated second, third, sixth, eighth and 10th respectively among 1A qualifying teams.

“We are extremely excited for this relay team to make it,” Meinerts said. “They have PR’d the past three or four meets, steadily dropping their time each time they ran. This is the first girls’ event as the Collins-Maxwell Spartans that has qualified for state.”

Collins-Maxwell is rated 20th among 1A qualifying teams in the event.

Whitney Spencer joined Moody, Cheville and Bane in running a third-place time of :53.72 in the girls’ 4 X 100. The Spartans were just a hair away from making state as the final qualifying time was :53.70 by Council Bluffs St. Albert.

Bane took fifth individually in the 400 hurdles with a 1:14.67 showing. Cheville was sixth in the long jump with a jump of 14-5.

The Spartan girls’ sprint medley, 4 X 200 and 4 X 400 teams all placed sixth.

Trinity Stover joined Spencer, Wierson and Kahler in running a 2:02.28 in the sprint medley and Bane joined up with Wierson, Spencer and Stover to finish the 4 X 200 in 1:54.75. Stover, Emma Kahler, Cheville and Wierson clocked in at 4:39.58 in the 4 X 400.

The state coed track meet takes place today through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The Class 1A competition starts at 9 a.m. today and Friday, and all classes begin at that time on Saturday.
