HUXLEY - The Ballard boys’ tennis team advanced to the Class 1A substate round with a 5-0 sweep of Saydel during the preliminary substate competition Saturday in Huxley.


Ballard won five matches in singles play. The meet ended before the No. 5 singles match could be completed as the Bombers had accumulated enough wins to wrap up the victory. The win put Ballard at 6-2 on the season.


Caleb Hamerlinck swept Saydel’s Peter Walkwitz with a pair of 6-4 victories in the No. 1 singles match and Max Olsan won the No. 2 match over Dalton Silver by 6-4 and 7-6 decisions, taking a 7-5 tiebreaker in the second set.


Chase Winterboer scored 7-5 and 6-0 victories over Zack Bobenhouse in the No. 3 match and Seth Wohlgemuth earned 6-2 and 6-4 victories over Lucas Graham in the No. 4 match. Jacob Alden pulled off 6-3 and 6-1 decisions over Saydel’s Mikel Nuzum in the No. 6 match.

BOONE - Ballard is sending one doubles team to the state singles and doubles tournament, following the Class 1A district meet May 9 in Boone.


The Bomber team of Caleb Hamerlinck and Max Olsan took second at the district meet. The duo scored a pair of 6-1 wins over Iowa Falls-Alden’s Dawson Hadwiger and Shawn Wesselman, then swept Saydel’s Lucas Graham and Mikel Nuzum with a pair of 6-0 shutouts.


In the semifinals, Hamerlinck and Olsan defeated Boone’s Jimmy Bousted and Jackson Smith in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4. In the championship round, Hamerlinck and Olsan came up short against another Boone team in Mason Hulse and Corbin Wafful by 7-6 and 6-2 scores.


Chase Winterboer and Seth Wohlgemuth also competed in the doubles tournament for Ballard, placing fourth.


Winterboer and Wohlgemuth scored two 6-0 shutouts over Hampton-Dumont’s Alex Anderson and Ray Velasquez and then a pair of 6-2 victories over Clarke’s Brandon Chavez and Nathan Porter to reach the semifinals. In the semis, Winterboer and Wohlgemuth suffered 6-1 and 6-2 losses to Hulse and Wafful and the Bomber team then lost a pair of 6-1 sets to Bousted and Smith in the third-place match.


During the singles tournament, Ballard’s Colin Anderson placed fourth.


Anderson scored 6-0 and 6-1 wins over Webster City’s Aidan Sullivan, then defeated Saydel’s Dalton Silver in three sets. Anderson opened with a 6-1 win over Sullivan and lost the second by a 6-2 score before coming back with a 6-4 triumph in the decisive third set.


In the semifinals, South Hardin’s Cauy Teske defeated Anderson in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1. Anderson fell in the third-place match to Boone’s Cody Frame by 6-2 and 6-0 scores.


Jacob Alden also competed in the singles tournament for Ballard.


Alden swept Clarke’s Evan Hegan by 6-3 and 6-2 scores in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Alden suffered 6-1 and 6-4 setbacks to Saydel’s Peter Walkwitz.


As a team, Ballard scored 21 points to come in just one point behind Boone’s winning score of 22. Saydel placed third with 16 points, Clarke and South Hardin tied for fourth with six points apiece and Hampton-Dumont and Webster City both went scoreless.


The 1A state singles and doubles tournament takes place at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo May 25 and 26.
