NEVADA - North Polk remained alive in the Heart of Iowa Conference championship hunt with a big 3-2 road win over Nevada in boys’ soccer Saturday at Cub Stadium in Nevada.

North Polk (7-1) suffered its first loss earlier in the week to HOIC rival Gilbert by a 2-0 score. The Comets didn’t do any sulking over the loss, coming back with a 4-0 win over non-conference rival Ballard two days later, then scoring the big victory over Nevada.

“It shows we’re ready for anyone,” North Polk forward Broc Hawkins said. “We have our goals back in mind. We had a little sit-down and we know what we need to do now. We’re ready to work and we’re ready to get going (toward) substate.”

Keegan Dorr scored the winning goal a little over three minutes into the second half. Dorr got a ball from Luke Hammond on the left side of the goal and got past Nevada defender Jack Cahill to put the ball in the net.

“It was a great ball from Hammond at center-back,” Dorr said. “It feels good to actually do something for the team.”

Dorr’s goal gave North Polk a 3-1 lead. But Nevada came right back when Devin See scored an unassisted goal just over two minutes later.

“That second goal was a pure accident,” North Polk keeper Christopher Martinez said. “My fault for a poor ball up the middle and good shot on his part.”

That put pressure on the the Comet defense to maintain the lead. They got the job done, despite an aggressive Cub attack through most of the second half.

“We just had to really watch, talk and make sure every move was on point,” Martinez said. “We were there.”

Hawkins assisted on both North Polk goals in the first half. Jonas Sussenguth recorded the first score at the 14:35 mark and Luis Sarceda found the net at the 24:38 mark.

Taylor Maiefski scored Nevada’s first half goal off a corner kick by Dennis Garcia shortly after Sussenguth’s goal. The Cubs fell to 8-6 with the loss.
