JEFFERSON - North Polk had a big day at a weather-shortened Heart of Iowa Conference track meet May 1 in Jefferson.

The Comet girls were crowned the conference team champions and the North Polk boys came in third, narrowly missing second place. The meet was called with three events remaining — the 1,600-meter run and 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relays — due to inclement weather.

The North Polk girls scored 129 points to beat Prairie City-Monroe by 25 points for the team title. The Comets won five events and added three silver and bronze medals apiece.

Maria Gorham had a huge day individually for the Comet girls. Gorham won all three individual sprints — the 100, 200 and 400 — and also placed second in the high jump.

Gorham and Greene County’s Megan Durbin — the first and second-place finishers in last year’s 3A girls’ high jump at state — had a tremendous rivalry going during the day.

Gorham edged Durbin for first in both the 100 and 200 and also defeated her in the 400. Durbin held a slight advantage in the high jump.

In the 100, Gorham crossed the finish line in :13.34 to edge Durbin’s :13.41. Gorham also won a close one in the 200, running a :26.33 to Durbin’s :26.77.

The open 400 saw Gorham cross the finish line in :59.15. Durbin took third in 1:02.68 and Prairie City-Monroe’s Paytan Schut was second with a 1:02.13 showing.

Gorham cleared the bar at five feet, two inches in the high jump. Durbin, the 2018 Drake Relays girls’ high jump champion, jumped 5-4 to take gold at the conference meet.

The North Polk girls also won the 4 X 800 and distance medley relays.

Sierra Lambert, Kennedy Wendel, Grace De Valois and Sophie Blanchard ran a winning time of 10:40.93 for North Polk in the 4 X 800. PCM came in second after finishing in 10:54.45.

Kara Gorham, Jazmyne Bailey, Elli Mandernach and Amelia Lesher won the distance medley for North Polk in 4:37.96. Roland-Story clocked in at 4:40.85 to take the silver.

Lesher joined up with Rebecca Ley, Mia Schumann and Liz Turk to take second in the sprint medley with a 1:57.92 showing. PCM captured the gold in the event after running a 1:55.19.

The Comet boys scored 114.5 points to come in just 3.5 points behind Nevada’s runner-up score. Gilbert won the boys’ team competition with a score of 135.

The North Polk boys didn’t win any events. But the Comets did rack up six silver and five bronze medals.

J.D. Elefson and Grant Croat placed second and third in the boys’ open 400 for North Polk with respective times of :51.53 and :53.29. Gilbert’s Will Greder won in :50.78.

Elefson also took second in the 200 and third in the 100.

In the 200, Elefson clocked in at :23.38 to finish just a hair behind the :23.21 run by Saydel’s Craig Garrison. Elefson finished the 100 in :12.03 to finish behind Garrison’s :11.56 and the :11.85 run by PCM’s Preston VanWyk.
