ALLEMAN - North Polk used great depth and relay performances to outclass the rest of the field at the Comet Relays boys’ track meet April 24 in Alleman.


The Comets won seven events and also placed second seven times, scoring 177.50 points to beat Webster City by 58.75 points for first out of eight teams. Ballard picked up one gold and two silver medals, scoring 67.75 points to place sixth.


Relays played a big role in North Polk’s decisive victory. The Comets won the 4 X 100, 4 X 200, 4 X 400 and 4 X 800-meter events and took third in the distance medley.


J.D. Elefson, Sutton Sears, Michael Williams and Alex Bolletta ran a time of 45.36 seconds in the 4 X 100 to edge BCLUW’s :45.66 for first. In the 4 X 200, Chris Banwart joined up with Williams, Sears and Bolletta to run a 1:36.71 and beat Woodward Academy’s 1:37.48 for the gold.


Grant Croat and Quinten Sommers teamed with Williams and Banwart to win gold in the 4 X 400 with a time of 3:41.38. Woodward Academy took second in 3:46.13.


In the 4 X 800 Will McCormick, Flint Vernon, Thomas Jones and Matt Crabb clocked in at 8:48.69 to beat out East Marshall’s 8:51.09 for first.


On the track, Jacob Wilcox won both the 3,200 and 1,600 with respective times of 10:28.52 and 4:56.67. Wilcox topped BCLUW’s Caleb Silver by just under 20 seconds in the 3,200 and the Mustangs’ Cam Hungerford by a little under 10 seconds in the 1,600.


Sommers won the 400 hurdles and earned a silver in the 110 highs.


Sommers finished the 400 hurdles in :57.77 to beat out the :59.46 by Webster City’s Garrett Whitmore for first. J.T. Stocker placed third in the event for North Polk with a time of 1:00.90.


In the 110 highs, Sommers clocked in at :15.55 to trail only the :14.79 run by BCLUW’s Jack Garber.


J.D. Elefson was runner-up in the 100, 200 and 400 for North Polk.


In the 100, Elefson ran an :11.23 to come in behind the :11.06 by Saydel’s Craig Garrison. Elefson clocked in at :23.03 in the 200 and he completed the 400 in :53.58 to finish just behind BCLUW’s Troy Dolphin, who finished in :53.38.


Jones won a bronze in the 800 for North Polk with a time of 2:13.80. Webster City’s Max Harfst won in 2:11.53 and East Marshall’s Cade Curphy was second in 2:12.61.


Caleb Lomica won silver in both the shot put and discus and Clark Hood was runner-up in the high jump to highlight a solid effort by the Comets in field events.


Lomica threw 50 feet, 4.5 inches in the shot put and 133-4 in the discus. East Marshall’s Justin Ridout won the shot with a toss of 54-9.5 and Webster City’s James Cherry just edged Lomica for the gold in the discus with a throw of 134-3.


Hood’s best jump in the high jump was 5-2. East Marshall’s Eli Anderson won with a 5-4 effort.


Noftsger provided the biggest highlight for Ballard at the meet by winning the 200. Noftsger just beat out Elefson for the gold with a time of :22.99.


Noftsger also helped Ballard win silver in both the sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays.


Isaac Schafbuch, Blaine Hermann and Kegan Odden joined Noftsger in running a time of 1:40.24 in the sprint medley. East Marshall just nosed out Ballard for first after running a 1:40.21.


Nic Edwards, Noftsger, Jeremiah Wilkinson and Schafbuch ran a 1:04.60 in the shuttle hurdle. BCLUW won in 1:02.11.


Odden took fourth in the high jump with a 5-2 effort. Ryan Ledet was fourth for the Bombers in the 1,600 after crossing the finish line in 5:11.48.
