BAXTER - Not being at full strength didn’t matter for North Polk at the Lady Bolt Relays April 19 in Baxter.


The Comets were without most of their large senior class, who were gone on a senior trip. But even with the lack of numbers, they won the team championship, scoring 107.1 points to beat Madrid by 11 points for first out of 12 teams.


Maria Gorham, one of two Comet seniors that didn’t go on the trip, won two gold medals, a silver and a bronze to anchor her team to victory.


Gorham won the high jump after clearing five feet. Her North Polk teammate Sadie Long and Webster City’s Haley Flaws tied for second after each jumping 4-10.


Gorham also took first in the open 800 with a time of two minutes, 30.29 seconds. She defeated Nevada’s Gabby Sampson by over 12 seconds for first.


In the 4 X 400 relay, Gorham teamed with Kennedy Wendel, Liz Turk and Eva Schoenberg to place second in 4:25.84. Madrid just beat out the Comets for first with a time of 4:24.80.


Gorham competed in the 100 for the first time in her varsity career and made a strong showing. She ran a :13.02 to place third behind the :12.68 by defending state champion Rylan Santi of Madrid and Flaws’ :12.99 effort.


Reagan Demmon won the 400 hurdles for North Polk. The Comets added a gold medal in the 4 X 800.


Demmon clocked in at 1:13.07 to defeat Northwood-Kensett’s Raquel Robinson’s 1:14.72 time for the win. In the 4 X 800 Kennedy Wendel, Jessica Weis, Ellie Owen and Grace Croat ran a time of 11:05.35 to beat out Baxter’s 11:10.85 for first.


Sophie Schaffer took second in the 1,500 and third in the 3,000 for North Polk. She ran respective times of 5:34.93 and 11:44.61.


Jenna Fagen picked up a silver medal in the long jump with a jump of 15-3.75. Baxter’s Sailor Hinegardner won the gold in the event with a jump of 15-6.


Demmon, Mia Schumann, Ava Rediske and Bailey Drent placed second in the shuttle hurdle with a 1:15.33 showing. Schoenberg, Wendel, Fagen and Turk picked up a bronze in the 4 X 200 after running a 1:55.12.


Collins-Maxwell came in eighth in the final team standings with 40.1 points.


Gracie Cheville, Josie Wierson, Shasta Moody and Brianda Bane gave the Spartans a win in the shuttle hurdle, beating out North Polk with a time of 1:14.68. Bane also placed third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:16.26.


Trinity Stover joined Moody, Wierson and Bane in running a 1:58.72 in the 4 X 200 to take fourth. Stover was fourth individually in the 200 with a time of :30.29.


The Spartans added a fourth-place time in the 4 X 800 as Whitney Spencer, Hannah Sievert, Mikayla Houge and Olivia Pasquariello clocked in at 11:41.83.
