NORWALK - The Nevada boys won three events and the Cub girls earned one gold, silver and bronze medal apiece at the Norwalk Coed Invitational track meet April 10 at Warrior Stadium.


The Cub boys took first in the sprint medley, 4 X 200 and 4 X 100 relays. They also won three bronze medals, scoring 82 points to come in sixth out of nine teams.


Gilbert edged Carlisle, 126.5 points to 122.5, to win the boys’ team championship. Norwalk placed third with 103 points, North Polk fourth with 99 and Grinnell finished just ahead of Nevada with a score of 84.5.


Brendan Sellberg, Preston Cattanach, Rodrigo Perez and Joven Nelson won both the sprint medley and 4 X 100-meter relays for Nevada.


The quartet dominated both events. They ran a time of one minute, 36.30 seconds in the sprint medley to beat North Polk by 4.27 seconds for first and in the 4 X 100, they clocked in at :44.26 to easily beat Winterset’s runner-up time of :45.35.


Jakob Strottman joined Sellberg, Perez and Nelson in running a winning time of 1:31.94 in the 4 X 200. The Cubs also won this relay with time to spare, beating Gilbert’s second-place time by 3.13 seconds.


Perez added an individual bronze medal in the 200 dash. Strottman placed third in both the 100 dash and 400 hurdles.


Perez completed the 200 in :23.74 to come in behind the :23.58 and :23.59 run by North Polk’s J.D. Elefson and Carlisle’s Max Goodhue. Strottman completed the 100 in :11.86 to tie Carlisle’s Ben Rowray for third behind Elefson’s :11.73 and the :11.85 run by Winterset’s Kaden Shaw.


In the 400 hurdles Strottman ran a 1:01.64. North Polk’s Quinten Sommers and Gilbert’s Jacob Calendine dominated the event with respective times of :57.31 and :57.90.


Strottman and Nelson also helped Nevada to a bronze in the shuttle hurdle relay. Luke Merfeld and Sam Abraham joined them in running a 1:02.58 to come in behind Carlisle’s time of :59.60 and Norwalk’s 1:01.82.


Carter Franzen placed fourth in the open 400 for the Cub boys after crossing the finish line in :54.79.


The Nevada girls tied Knoxville for sixth out of nine teams with 54 points. Dallas Center-Grimes beat Carlisle by one point, 137 to 136, for the girls’ team championship and North Polk scored 111 points for third, Norwalk 82.5 points for fourth and Grinnell 73.5 points for fifth.


Samara Sharp won the girls’ 100 for Nevada. She finished the race in :14.09 to just outlast Carlisle’s Delaney Schnathorst by one-hundredth of a second for the gold.


Sharp also helped Nevada take second in the sprint medley and a bronze in the 4 X 200.


Emily Plate, Caitlyn Sharp and Sydney Mosinski ran the other three legs for Nevada in the sprint medley. The Cubs clocked in at 2:00.08 to just hold off North Polk (2:00.24) for second behind DCG’s time of 1:58.73.


In the 4 X 200, that same quartet clocked in at 1:55.73 to place behind DCG’s 1:50.82 and North Polk’s 1:51.74. They also ran a fourth-place time of :54.37 in the 4 X 100.


Mosinski took fourth individually in the 200 with a time of :29.46 and Caitlyn Sharp was fifth in :29.50. Bailey Crain stepped up with a fourth-place throw of 94-4 in the discus and Avery Mather took fifth in the 400 hurdles with a 1:20.26 showing.
