NEVADA - Everything started off fine for Ballard in its season opener against Nevada in boys’ soccer March 29, but things quickly went south for the Bombers late in the first half and they could never recover in an 8-2 loss at Cub Stadium.
Ballard hung with Nevada for 30 minutes. The Bombers scored in the opening minute of play and added another goal in the final 10 minutes of the half to keep the score even at 2-2.
On defense, freshman keeper Brady Ehresman did a great job against a barrage of Nevada attacks to help keep his team close. But the Cubs eventually wore down a young Bomber defense with six unanswered goals.
“It’s a learning experience,” Ballard head coach Marcelo Irvin said. “One freshman keeper, two freshmen on defense and a freshman midfielder, you don’t do that very many times. That keeper (Ehresman), yeah, he got scored on eight times, (but) he stopped a million shots. It shows a lot of work this that this kid did.”
A Devin See goal with just under seven minutes left in the first half put Nevada up for good at 3-2. Carter Bremer added another goal in the final minute of the half, then See, Rodrigo Perez, Anthony Ellis and Dennis Garcia each scored in the first 20 minutes of the second half to break the game open for the Cubs.
Ellis finished the game with two goals and Taylor Maiefski added an early score for Nevada. Bremer, Brendan Sellberg and Andrew Saunders each finished with an assist for the Cubs.
Irvin said his team has nothing to be ashamed of in the loss. He said his young squad must stay positive and focus on getting better — one game at a time.
“It’s being able to realize in their minds they can do this,” Irvin said. “You’ve got to keep your head up. You can go 0-14 and by the time you go to substate, you can still qualify (for state). You never know. It’s a building process.”
James Gute scored an unassisted goal 54 seconds into the game and Andre Hahn converted a corner kick into a goal during the 30:34 mark of the game for the two Bomber goals.
