ALLEMAN - The North Polk boys’ basketball team had its moments against unbeaten South Hamilton Friday at Alleman, but the Comets were hurt by two poor stretches in the first half as they suffered a 71-57 setback.

South Hamilton went on runs of 17-2 and 10-0 in the first half to go up 15 at the break. The Hawks eventually pushed their lead to 21 points before coasting to victory as they went to 20-0 overall and wrapped up a perfect 14-0 run through the Heart of Iowa Conference.

North Polk fell to 4-16 overall and finished 3-11 in the conference. The Comets actually played well for most of the game, outscoring South Hamilton 36-35 in the second half, but the two early Hawk spurts were too much to overcome.

“That’s why they haven’t lost all year,” North Polk head boys’ basketball coach Nick Wilkins said. “They just don’t make mistakes. We were going to have to be pretty perfect in order to hang in there and make it a game at the end.”

The Comets shot at a solid 44 percent clip from the field and made 7 of 17 3-pointers. But behind the great playmaking of point guard Marco Balderas, South Hamilton canned an impressive 58 percent of its field goals and the Hawks also won the rebounding battle by a 31-17 margin.

“We played really well for 70 percent of it,” Wilkins said. “I thought the effort was there the whole game, but as far as execution, I thought we were good for 70 percent of the game and you can’t do that against a team that’s undefeated.”

Colten Parkins had 13 points and four rebounds and Braden Hoksbergen 10 points, five assists and three steals for North Polk. Caleb Lomica added 11 points and two rebounds before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury and Cameron Markert tacked on eight points, two assists and one block.

Balderas had 15 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals for South Hamilton, becoming the school’s all-time assist leader in the process. Conner Hill netted a game-high 23 points and Logan Peters scored 16 points for the Hawks.
