MAXWELL - The Collins-Maxwell boys’ basketball team showed some rustiness in a 62-26 loss to Paton-Churdan Feb. 1 at Maxwell.

The Spartans (1-17) were playing in their first game is six days and they were lethargic early, falling behind 24-5 after one quarter and 45-16 by halftime.

“We did not come out ready to play basketball, which is frustrating after the long break we’ve had,” Collins-Maxwell head boys’ basketball coach Wes Stover said. “Credit to Paton-Churdan, they came out and shot lights out.”

Collins-Maxwell did show some life in the third quarter. Carter Fricke converted two baskets, Ben Hofer scored one and Mason Markley drilled a 3-pointer as part of a 9-4 Spartan run to start the half.

“I challenged them at halftime to come out and play basketball, which they did,” Stover said. “We’ve just got to sustain it.”

Paton-Churdan answered with a 13-0 run to put the game away.

Collins-Maxwell had a cold shooting night, making just 9 of 48 field goals. Paton-Churdan shot 52 percent.

The Spartans managed to hang with the Rockets on the boards. They held a slim 32-30 rebounding advantage.
