HUXLEY - A disruptive defense sparked the Ballard girls’ basketball team to a 55-25 victory over Perry Friday at Huxley.


Ballard forced 29 turnovers, resulting in the Bombers more than doubling Perry in field-goal attempts (47 to 23) and still getting to the line four more times (13 to 9). Ballard shot 44 percent from the field to Perry’s 34 percent and held a 27-20 rebounding advantage, moving to 10-9 overall and 9-3 in the Raccoon River Conference.


The second quarter was the key stretch of play for Ballard. The Bombers outscored the Bluejays 22-6 in the period to build an 18-point lead at the half and Perry couldn’t recover, dropping to 2-17 overall and 0-12 in the conference.


Maggie Larson had 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals for Ballard in the win. Tara Sanders tacked on 10 points and two steals; Ana Vier eight points, six rebounds and four steals; Josie Fleischmann seven points and three rebounds and Molly Ihle four points and five steals.


Charity Ransom chipped in three points and four rebounds, Summer McVicker three points and Abby Catus, Karlee Ahrenholtz, Shayia Schulze and Sydni Thrailkill two points apiece.


Grace Stewart led Perry with 10 points. Alyssa Kruger added nine for the Bluejays.

CARLISLE - Ballard bounced back from a late Carlisle rally to knock off the Wildcats in overtime, 55-51, Jan. 30 at Carlisle.


The Bombers built a 41-30 lead, only to see Carlisle come back strong in the fourth quarter to pull even at 47-47. But in overtime, Ballard stepped up its defensive play to hold off the Wildcats and improve its record to 9-9 overall and 8-3 in the Raccoon River Conference.


Ballard forced 25 turnovers and survived 23 of its own mistakes. The Bombers shot 45 percent from the field, compared to 38 percent by Carlisle, and made seven 3-pointers to six by the Wildcats.


Ballard overcame Carlisle’s strong 15 of 21 showing from the line and a slight 25-24 Wildcat rebounding advantage.


Molly Ihle had 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals for Ballard in the win. Tara Sanders drained four 3-pointers, for a total of 12 points, and Sydni Thrailkill had nine points and three rebounds.


Josie Fleischmann produced eight points and four steals, Abby Catus four points and Maggie Larson three points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals. Ana Vier and Charity Ransom added two points apiece for the Bombers.


Carlisle fell to 10-7 overall and 7-4 in the conference. Molly Hoekstra had 18 points, Abby Curtis 12 points and three steals and Meredith Hoffman 12 points and two blocks for the Wildcats.
