ALLEMAN - The North Polk girls’ basketball team celebrated getting a piece of the Heart of Iowa Conference championship Friday with a 62-31 home victory over South Hamilton in Alleman.


Led by the trio of Maggie Phipps, Jaedon Murphy and Katie Brown, North Polk was in firm control throughout the game. The Comets, ranked No. 10 in Class 3A, jumped out to a 16-6 lead, went up 33-15 at the half and pushed their advantage to 31 points early in the fourth quarter.


The win put North Polk at 18-3 to end the regular season. The Comets finished 12-2 in the HOIC, tying them with No. 6 Roland-Story and No. 7 Nevada for the conference championship.


“That was our goal from the beginning of the year,” Phipps said. “To accomplish that, it was really great.”


Phipps had 18 points on 8 of 15 shooting Friday. Murphy put up 16 points on 6 of 7 shooting and added four rebounds and two blocks and Brown tacked on 13 points and three steals.


“It’s hard for teams to guard us,” Brown said. “Once we get the flow going, you can’t stop all three of us.”


North Polk shot 47 percent from the field and made 7 of 8 free throws. The Comets were also tough defensively, limiting South Hamilton to 32-percent shooting and coming up with 16 steals and five blocks.


The strong play on both ends has North Polk on a seven-game winning streak heading into 3A regionals. The Comets will face Creston in the quarterfinals this Saturday at 7 p.m. in Alleman.


“We’re definitely going to keep the intensity throughout the postseason,” Murphy said. “(We’re going to) try to reach the rest of our goals, since we reached conference champs.”


Maddie Bruggeman added six points and two steals and Katie Scott three points, six assists and two steals for North Polk against South Hamilton. Rebecca Ley chipped in two points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists and Hannah Foster and Danielle Bonewitz netted two points apiece.


South Hamilton finished 6-8 in the HOIC and fell to 8-13 overall. Marla Grubb had 18 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks.

BONDURANT - North Polk offset a rough shooting night with tremendous defense in a 38-19 non-conference win over Bondurant-Farrar Feb. 1 at Bondurant.


The Comets only shot 25 percent from the field in the win. But North Polk held Bondurant-Farrar to 22-percent shooting and took advantage of the Bluejays’ poor 2 of 13 showing from the foul line.


North Polk’s defense was especially tough after the first quarter. The Comets held the Bluejays to just 11 points over the final three quarters, taking a 20-11 lead at the half and gradually pulling away.


Jaedon Murphy posted a double-double with 11 points and rebounds apiece and she also blocked four shots for North Polk. Maggie Phipps had 10 points, five steals, two blocks and two assists; Katie Scott seven points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists and Rebecca Ley four points, five rebounds and one block.


Avery Fried led Bondurant-Farrar with 10 points and nine rebounds. Kaylee Seitzer tacked on 13 boards for the Bluejays.

MONROE - North Polk blew past Prairie City-Monroe with a big third quarter, 68-38, Jan. 30 at Monroe.


The Comets outscored the Mustangs 18-4 in the third period to build a 24-point lead en route to improving their record to 16-3 overall and remaining tied atop the Heart of Iowa Conference at 11-2.


North Polk was awesome on the glass, outrebounding PCM by a 52-30 margin. The Comets also held the Mustangs to 25-percent shooting from the field and racked up 13 steals and an impressive 11 blocks as a team.


Maggie Phipps had a great all-around game with 21 points, seven rebounds, six blocks, four assists and three steals for the Comets. Jaedon Murphy added 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks; Katie Brown 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals and Rebecca Ley 11 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.


Regan Freland scored a game-high 22 points and added five rebounds for the Mustangs, who fell to 6-14 overall and 5-9 in the conference.
