HUXLEY - Ballard couldn’t find a solution to Boone’s smothering defense and potent fast break in a 49-21 loss Jan. 23 at Huxley.

The Bombers didn’t hit a double-digit point total until Molly Ihle converted a free throw three minutes, 55 seconds left in the third quarter. The Bombers trailed by 21 at that point and Boone, the No. 6 team in Class 4A, coasted to victory to remain perfect in the Raccoon River Conference at 9-0 and go to 15-1 overall..

“They’re a very good team — well coached — and we’re struggling with some things right now,” Ballard head coach Kelly Anderson said. “I’m not doing a very good job as a coach. We were making progress and now we’re not and that’s on me. We’ve got to get some things changed.”

Ballard only shot 13 percent from the field. The Bombers were limited to five field goals.

Ballard did shoot well from the foul line (10 of 14). The Bombers also forced 13 turnovers.

Boone shoot 54 percent from the field. The Toreadors held a 30-16 rebounding advantage.

The loss was Ballard’s third in a row. The Bombers fell to 7-9 overall and 6-3 in the RRC.

But Anderson is optimistic his team can turn it around before the start of 4A regional play.

“We’ve got five more games in the conference and we need to win out,” Anderson said. “We do that, we end up second place in the conference, which is not a huge consolation prize, but at least we’ve got something to play for still.”

Ihle had six points and seven rebounds and Ana Vier five points, three rebounds and one assist, block and steal apiece for Ballard against Boone. Tara Sanders, Josie Fleischmann, Karlee Ahrenholtz and Rachel Wohlgemuth each scored two points and Sanders added three steals.

Emma Dighton paced Boone with 18 points and three assists. Caitlynne Shadle added 12 points, five assists and three steals; Claire Sandvig tallied nine points, 12 rebounds and five blocks and Madlyn Danner delivered seven points, five rebounds and four steals for the Toreadors.
