GILBERT - Chase Winterboer provided the perfect capper to a classic game between the Ballard and Gilbert boys’ basketball teams Monday at Gilbert.

Gilbert took a 66-64 lead with seven seconds left on a driving layup by Matt Barragy, when Isaiah Deason quickly inbounded the ball to Winterboer. Winterboer took the ball, dribbled down the left sideline, cut toward the middle of the court, took a step back as he neared the top of the key and flung up a 25-foot shot.

The ball took one bounce off the back of the rim and went through the net as time expired to give Ballard a thrilling 67-66 victory.

The Bombers trailed 54-51 going into the fourth quarter. The Bombers exploded for 44 points in the first half to go up by four, but they sputtered in the third quarter, finishing with just seven points in the period to allow Gilbert to go in front.

Ballard picked up the pace again on offense in the fourth quarter to set up the wild finish. The win put the Bombers at 5-6 on the season.

Strong shooting enabled Ballard to overcome 22 turnovers. The Bombers shot 54 percent from the field.

Winterboer was fantastic in the victory.

Winterboer made 6 of 9 3-pointers — accounting for every Bomber attempt from beyond the arc — and scored a game-high 25 points. He also had six steals, four assists and one block.

Connor Drew posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Isaac Schafbuch and Kegan Odden each netted 10 points for Ballard. Schafbuch also had six rebounds and Odden contributed five boards, two assists and two blocks.

Gilbert dropped to 4-6. Will Turner had 21 points and Barragy ended up with 10 points and six rebounds for the Tigers.
