ALLEMAN - Balanced scoring helped No. 7 (Class 3A) North Polk roll past Prairie City-Monroe, 71-50, for its seventh-consecutive victory Jan. 4 at Alleman.

The Comets picked up right where they left off before Christmas.

After disposing of ranked foes Roland-Story and West Marshall in their final games before the break, the Comets pummeled PCM for 45 first-half points, building an 18-point lead at the break. That enabled them to go on cruise control the rest of the way to improve to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

The trio of Maggie Phipps, Katie Brown and Jaedon Murphy combined for 53 points in the win.

“With that balance you can’t have three people guard us three and the whole team at the same time,” Phipps said. “Any of us on the whole team can score that much. It’s just who guards us and who can get the ball to whom. I think we’re doing a great job of getting the ball to each other, especially the surrounding players like our point guards, and getting the ball to the hoop.”

Phipps was North Polk’s hot hand before the break and she continued that trend against PCM with 20 points, seven rebounds, five steals, three blocks and two assists. She got North Polk going against the Mustangs with 10 points in the first quarter and then Brown took over in the second.

Brown went off for nine of her 17 points in the second quarter as North Polk outscored PCM 25-12 in the period to break the game open.

“We had some good adrenaline going and we were just knocking down shots,” Brown said. “We really got a flow going in the second quarter.”

Murphy finished with 16 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field. She also pulled down eight rebounds.

North Polk killed PCM on the offensive glass with 19 offensive rebounds. The Comets totaled 19 assists on 28 field goals and the made nine 3-pointers.

Freshman Abbi Zimmer had seven points and three assists off the bench for North Polk. Carolyn Steffen added nine rebounds and four points and Katie Scott dished out eight assists and scored two points.

Defensively, North Polk came up with 10 steals and six blocks as a team. PCM knocked down some shots - converting 45 percent of its shots and 7 of 14 3-pointers - but the Mustangs had trouble maintaining consistency against the tough Comet defense.

“We’ve really just been working on being aggressive and getting up on them and pressuring the ball,” Murphy said.

PCM fell to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the HOIC. Freshman Lillian Baird scored a game-high 22 points for the Mustangs and Regan Freland added 12 points and six assists.
