ALLEMAN - A dominant one-two punch from Caleb Lomica and Colten Parkins helped North Polk overpower Saydel, 55-33, for its first victory of the season Dec. 12 at Alleman.

Lomica and Parkins combined for 43 points, leading North Polk to the decisive win. Led by their outstanding play, the Comets jumped out to a 19-4 lead and were never threatened, going to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

“We’ve got to get the team going,” Parkins said of his teaming with Lomica to give Saydel a constant headache. “Once we go, the whole team goes.”

Lomica had 23 points, eight rebounds and four blocks from the low post. He made 8 of 15 field goals and 7 of 9 free throws.

“We worked on a little offense yesterday, getting the ball inside more and we moved the ball really well tonight,” Lomica said. “The guards got open shots and it opens it up inside and one thing led to another.”

Lomica was especially effective from the left block in the post.

“It’s my go-to spot,” Lomica said.

He also threw down a pair of dunks in the third quarter to demoralize Saydel.

“They were wide open,” Lomica said. “You’ve got to go for the wide-open dunks.”

Parkins burned Saydel for 20 points on the perimeter. He made both of the team’s 3-pointers and added five rebounds, five assists and four steals as the duo worked together seamlessly to give Saydel a constant headache.

“My shots really haven’t been falling outside until this game,” Parkins said. “I’ve been trying to drive more and get other teammates open and letting the 3s come when they do.”

Lomica said getting the first victory of the season is a big lift for his team heading into the final week before Christmas break.

“Now we’ve seen what we can do and how to win,” Lomica said. “I think we’ll be rolling from here on out.”

Sam Carstensen added four points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block for North Polk. Cameron Markert had two points, seven assists, and four steals.

Mark Cox chipped in four points and one rebound and Cole Bouchard netted two points for the Comets. Jackson Jarrell led Saydel with eight points as the Eagles fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
