JEWELL - The North Polk girls’ basketball team owned the first three quarters against South Hamilton in a 53-19 victory over the Hawks Friday at Jewell.


The Comets held the Hawks under five points in each of the first three quarters. They led by nine after one quarter, 19 at the half and 36 by the end of the third before coasting the rest of the way to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


North Polk held South Hamilton without a 3-pointer and to just eight field goals overall at a meager 21-percent accuracy rate. The Comets also came up with 17 steals.


Maggie Phipps had 14 points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds and Katie Brown nine points, three steals and two assists for North Polk. Rebecca Ley tacked on seven points, nine rebounds and three steals; Jaedon Murphy six points, 10 rebounds and two blocks and Katie Scott six points and two assists, steals and rebounds apiece.


Sydney Friest led South Hamilton with six points, nine rebounds and four blocks. The Hawks fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

GILBERT - North Polk used a dominant stretch over the middle two quarters to put away nemesis Gilbert, 55-29, Dec. 5 at Gilbert.


The Comets, ranked 15th in Class 3A, outscored the Tigers 21-5 in the second quarter and 16-8 in the third to build a 48-23 advantage. They coasted the rest of the way to earn their third win at Gilbert in a row and improve to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


North Polk came up with 12 steals and held Gilbert to 32 percent shooting. The Comets converted six 3-pointers and held Gilbert to just nine attempts from the foul line.


Jaedon Murphy was dominant with 18 points, Katie Brown added 12 points and Maggie Phipps scored eight for North Polk. All three players made two 3-pointers and Murphy added five rebounds and one steal, Brown one steal and Phipps four assists, three rebounds, two steals and one block.


Katie Scott tacked on four points and assists apiece and Rebecca Ley two points and four steals. Carolyn Steffen pulled down three rebounds and Maddie Bruggeman came up with two blocks for the Comets.


Gilbert fell to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Thea Rotto had six points, nine rebounds and two blocks; Sarah Hinners six points, seven boards, two assists, one steal and one block and Kenzie Miller six points and three rebounds for the Tigers.
