BOONE - The Ballard boys’ basketball team used tough defense and a powerful post game to oust Boone, 60-45, for a Raccoon River Conference road win Friday at Boone.


The Bombers moved to 2-0 in the conference and 2-2 overall by limiting the Toreadors to 31-percent shooting from the field and forcing 21 turnovers. On offense, Ballard shot at a solid 46-percent clip from the field.


A strong start to each half keyed the win.


Ballard outscored Boone by 12 points in the first quarter, building a 32-21 lead at the half. The Bombers outpaced the Toreadors by eight in the third to blow the game open.


Connor Drew pounded Boone for 21 points on 9 of 12 shooting from the field. Drew also corralled six rebounds and had two assists and steals apiece.


Isaac Schafbuch added 11 points, five rebounds, two blocks, one assist and one steal inside for Ballard. Max Olsan stepped up with six points, 10 rebounds and one assist; Brooks Fleischmann came up with six points and one steal; Chase Winterboer delivered five points and five assists and Kegan Odden also netted five points.


Matej Vukic led Boone with 10 points and four rebounds. John Herrick and Trevor Vanpelt each scored nine and Justin Aspengren finished with seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks for the Toreadors

PELLA - For one half, Ballard outclassed traditional power Pella on the road Dec. 5 in Pella.


Ballard led 21-17 at the half after holding Pella to just seven points in the second quarter. But the second half was a different story.


The Little Dutch exploded for 26 points in the third quarter to move in front for good, handing the Bombers a 59-52 setback.


Ballard outrebounded Pella 36-29 and shot 40 percent from the field. The Bombers were hurt by 18 turnovers and they only got to the foul line seven times, falling to 1-2 on the season.


Kegan Odden went off for a game-high 15 points and Chase Winterboer hit three 3-pointers and had 12 points, four assists and two steals for Ballard in a losing effort. Isaac Schafbuch chipped in eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks and Reece Huen 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.


Ryan Gustafson and Landon VanderLeest each scored 13 points to lead a balanced Pella attack. Logan Shetterly added 12 points, five assists and four steals and Nick DeJong 11 points and 12 rebounds to help the Little Dutch improve to 3-0 on the season.
