HUXLEY - Strong defense in the first half and a great close offensively netted the Ballard girls’ basketball team its first victory of the season with a 47-28 triumph over Adel-Desoto-Minburn Friday at Huxley.


The Bombers (1-2) held the Tigers to just 11 points in the first half, building a 10-point lead in their Raccoon River Conference opener. They maintained that edge through the third quarter, then put up 16 points in the fourth that combined with another stout defensive stretch to wrap up the victory.


Ballard held ADM to 33-percent shooting from the field and just five free-throw attempts. The Bombers forced 19 turnovers and posted a 32-21 rebounding advantage.


Molly Ihle and Tara Sanders provided a big offensive spark for Ballard.


Ihle turned in a fantastic all-around game. She scored 11 points and also had nine steals, eight rebounds and seven assists.


Sanders led Ballard in scoring with 16 points after getting hot from outside, making 4 of 8 3-pointers on the night. She also contributed five rebounds.


Josie Fleischmann also turned in a solid all-around game with eight points, five assists and four rebounds. Maggie Larson had five points, three rebounds and one steal; Ana Vier four points, five rebounds, one block and one steal; Karlee Ahrenholtz two points and one assist and Sydni Thrailkill four rebounds, one assist and one steal.


Emma Jacobsen hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for ADM in a losing effort as the Tigers dropped to 0-3 on the season.

NORWALK - Ballard couldn’t overcome a huge disadvantage at the foul line in a heartbreaking 37-35 overtime loss to Norwalk Nov. 28 at Norwalk.


The Bombers committed 22 fouls and sent Norwalk to the line 29 times. Ballard only attempted 12 foul shots, falling to 0-2 on the season.


A great defensive effort in the second quarter gave Ballard an 18-12 lead at the half. Norwalk limited the Bombers to 14 points over the final two quarters to pull even by the end of regulation


In overtime, Ballard’s offensive problems continued to persist. The Bombers played tough defense in overtime, but only scored three points in the period.


Ballard held Norwalk to 25-percent shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers. The Bombers were limited to 32-percent shooting and they gave up the ball 23 times.


Ana Vier posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds for Ballard in a losing effort. Molly Ihle recorded three points, seven rebounds, seven steals and three assists.


Charity Ransom put up four points and five steals and Summer McVicker also netted four points for Ballard. Josie Fleischmann chipped in three points and Tara Sanders, Maggie Larson, Sydni Thrailkill and Karlee Ahrenholtz two apiece.


Giana Bellizzi led Norwalk with 10 points. Bren Moritz added nine points and 10 rebounds and Shae Campbell nine points, three assists and three steals.
