HUXLEY - Efficient shooting from inside the arc and the foul line gave the Ballard boys’ basketball team a 57-52 victory over Adel-Desoto-Minburn to open Raccoon River Conference play Friday in Huxley.


Ballard only made 1 of 9 3-pointers, but the Bombers were 19 of 34 on 2-point shots, shooting at a solid 46-percent clip overall from the field. Ballard held ADM to just 39-percent shooting from the field.


The Bombers also went an impressive 16 of 18 from the line compared to just a 7 of 14 showing by the Tigers. Ballard committed 13 turnovers to 10 for ADM, but the Bombers won the rebounding battle by a 34-28 margin.


A big finish on offense put Ballard over the top. The Bombers trailed by two at the half, but evened things up after three quarters. Then they scored 25 points in the fourth to pull out in front and earn their first victory, improving to 1-1.


Chase Winterboer led Ballard with 16 points after making 4 of 8 field goals, including the Bombers’ only 3-pointer, and 7 of 8 free throws. Winterboer also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals.


Isaac Schafbuch had 14 points after making 6 of 9 shots and both his free throws, and he added five rebounds, one assist and one block. Connor Drew tallied 12 points and eight rebounds.


Kegan Odden, Isaiah Deason and Max Olsan each chipped in four points and Brooks Fleischmann scored three for Ballard. Odden also had six rebounds and one assist, Deason four rebounds, Olsan two boards and Fleischmann one steal.


Reece Huen finished with two assists, one rebound and one steal for Ballard.


Rylan Heffeman had 14 points, four rebounds, one assists and two steals for ADM. Koby Hardcastle added 12 points and Trey Volz 10 for the Tigers, who fell to 1-1.

NORWALK - Ballard wasn’t able to slow down an explosive Norwalk team in its season opener Nov. 28 as the Bombers suffered a 101-75 loss at Norwalk.


Both teams shot over 50 percent, but Norwalk attempted 21 more field goals than Ballard. Turnovers and rebounding hurt the Bombers as they gave up the ball 21 times and were outrebounded 36-27.


The second quarter was the decisive stretch of the game. Norwalk turned a two-point lead after one quarter into a 50-31 advantage at the half.


Chase Winterboer hit 5 of 8 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals for Ballard in a losing effort. Connor Drew came up with 17 points and six rebounds and Isaiah Deason netted 15 points on a perfect 6 of 6 shooting display from the field.


Isaach Schafbuch added seven points and one block; Max Olsan five points, one assist and one steal and Reece Huen four points, three rebounds and two assists for the Bombers.


Daniel Geistler put up a game-high 22 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the field and Bowen Born added 19 points, five assists and four steals for Norwalk. Luke Vaske finished with 19 points, six assists and two steals and Blake Johnson 15 points and eight rebounds.
