MONROE - The North Polk volleyball team made short work of Prairie City-Monroe in its final match of the regular season Oct. 12 at Monroe.
The Comets swept the Mustangs by scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-13. The victory put North Polk at 21-15 overall and the Comets finished Heart of Iowa Conference play at 4-3.
North Polk produced 29 kills against 14 errors in 98 attacks for a .153 kill-efficiency rate. The Comets went 66 of 72 serving with four aces and they had 66 digs and three blocks.
Carolyn Steffen came up with nine kills, 11 digs and one ace to lead a balanced Comet attack. Rebecca Ley, Jaedon Murphy and Emily Larson each delivered five kills, with Ley adding four digs, Murphy two blocks and Larson one dig.
Bella Rademacher finished with three kills and one block and Leah Cam one kill and block apiece. Nora Aschoff delivered 18 digs, one assist and one ace; Katie Scott 10 digs and one ace; Jalen Heintz two digs and Hailey Steffen one dig.
Danielle Bonewitz finished with 17 assists and Grace Nelson handed out 11 for the Comets. Bonewitz also had 11 digs and one ace and Nelson five digs and one kill.
GILBERT - North Polk pushed No. 5 (Class 3A) Gilbert hard for three sets before running out of gas in a four-set loss to the Tigers Oct. 10 in Gilbert.
The Comets upset the Tigers in the opening set by a 25-20 score. Gilbert came back with a 25-16 win in the second set, but North Polk regrouped to nearly take the third set before coming up just short by a 27-25 score.
The tight loss in the third set took the wind out of North Polk’s sails. The Comets suffered a 25-19 loss in the fourth set to drop the match.
North Polk finished with 42 kills and 18 errors in 144 attacks for a .167 kill-efficiency rate. The Comets went 74 of 81 serving with four aces and they compiled 58 digs and 10 blocks.
Carolyn Steffen put up 13 kills, 10 digs and two aces and Grace Nelson had 21 assists, five digs, one kill and one ace for North Polk. Nora Aschoff finished with 20 digs, four assists and one ace and Danielle Bonewitz delivered 13 assists and 10 digs.
Leah Cam and Rebecca Ley each delivered seven kills, Jaedon Murphy added six and Emily Larson five. Cam and Larson also put up three blocks apiece.
Hailey Becker tacked on three kills, three blocks and one dig and Katie Scott added 12 digs. Bella Rademacher contributed one block for the Comets.
